i don't want to go to paris anymore, is that how it really is?

seriously. like adam described it, it seemed like hell. how similar/different is paris in actuality?

reply

I visited once and that was not my impression at all. The streets were clean and the sights were magnificent. At least in the places I went to (Quartier Latin, St. German, Champs Elisees, typical tourist turf).

J'adore Paris! I absoulutly love Paris. I have been there once or twice a year for the last 12 years and do not plan on changing that anytime soon. I really enjoyed the movie but it WAS NOT an accurate view of the city. While it can be dirty in some places, it is just like any other large metro city. Visiting Paris is something everyone should do at least once in their life.

As an American who has been living in Paris for the past 12 years, I agree with the previous statement. It's like every other big city in that it can be pretty dirty. But I do find Paris way dirtier than NY (for instance), contrary to popular belief. People are very hands on about cleaning up after your pet in NY, while as here... let's just say not at all. Also, pigeons are fearless, I've almost been beaked quite a few times. :p I haven't seen this movie yet, but now I think I'm gonna have to.

why buy the cow when you get the sex for free ?

The PIDGEONS! OMG. My niece and I called them Mutant Ninja Parisian Pidgeons (she was a baby when we visited Paris). They know no fear. They sit right next to you and BEG for food. Sometimes taking it from your plate.

Warning to future tourists. Don't EVER Try to feed the birds in Paris. You will be sorry. There will be blood!

It's wonderful. Very easy to maneuver using the metro even if you do not speak French. If you noticed in the beginning of the film, Marion mentions she was "born in the 12th and grew up in the 9th," and so on. (I can't remember exactly which ones.) Those are the arrondissements, or sections of Paris. They are very distinct and visiting each one is almost like visiting a different little city inside of a city. And, the parks are beautiful. I am female and went in my early 20's with a female friend who was also on a reunion trip for her study abroad program from college. So, much of the time I did spend alone. I had no problem at all, although it certainly would have been easier had I spoken French. I thought the people were very nice. I would recommend a guide or group to get you settled into where you are staying and such if you are not comfortable with that sort of thing. (I had my friend for doing that much.) Then, I would not worry too much. Just be nice and I think they will be nice in return. You will also find many other people who will speak English who are traveling at the same time who are familiar with the area who can help you.

tommybass,

I have to admit that there is some truth in what you have said...

Although being a parisian born, I feel sometimes like an alien in some part of the city.

And, I don't think we have an immigration policy of any sort apart from pompous
and meaningless speeches... The kind of speeches that even French can't stand anymore

Oh, and don't forget to go in the south west part of the country where you can find some marvelous places along the Dordogne river (ask the Brits !)

reply

Not visiting a beautiful city because you got a bad impression from one small film is a bit silly don't you think?

reply

I agree with the previous post! Don't knock it untill you try it!

reply

well said. if you believe everything you see, then you are doing a disservice to yourself as well as everyone around you

reply

While watching the movie I said to my husband, can you remind me why this is my favorite city on earth. Don't worry, while this is definately one face of Paris it's not the one you will see as a normal tourist. Paris is WONDERFUL!!!

reply

plus you need to remember that it's a movie and there's something comedic in jack's particular experience in paris (hardly a normal one, otherwise it would not be a successful comedy!)

i've been to paris once for about 5 days and will be living there this summer and cannot wait

it's an awesome city and i think having seen this movie after having already made it even more endearing to me, it's one of my favorite movies that take place in paris

...ciertas moradas, un paraíso a donde dice Él tiene sus deleites.

reply

Oh and Montmartre (among a few others, à la tour eiffel with the "bosnian women without homes and starving children") is a bit ridiculous, but so is everywhere else in tourist filled europe - you just have to ignore it or speak another language so they leave you alone

...ciertas moradas, un paraíso a donde dice Él tiene sus deleites.

reply

Well it had the exact opposite on me after watching this film i really wanted to go to Paris. But it did however make me not want to go to america.

))<>(( Forever.

I think it's a very accurate description of Paris It's not the tourist version of Paris, but the real life version of paris. I've been living here for 4 years & I watched this movie thinking the characters & everything is so true! up to the scene in the metro, everything is accurate. I've learned to love the city, because there is always new intriguing places to discover, with out of their mind artists, few racists, fanatics of ecology & people sick o the government.
But don't let this movie keep you from coming :)
