you HAVE to read the book, I enjoyed the movie though at times I felt they cut out important parts and sometimes the acting got bad. They also change some stuff around by completley making up scenes that dont even occur in the book (like most of the beginning). Anyways, in the book it shows that the reason Margaret hates Tory so much is because she lived while Hope died. Hope was the favorite, the glue that held the family together and when she dies everyones life kind of fell apart, except Cade. Their father in his sorrow turned to booze and other women, dying in a plane wreck with a mistress, Faith brings scandal to the family name and Margaret turns from her children to her garden refusing to have a relationship with the two alive. Margaret says "it should have been you" to Tory. Even with the real killer brought to justice she hates her for the fact that she lived. In the book the impression it leaves you is that she will never change because her heart is to hardened.
Hope that helped!
