Questionable ending (spoiler)

I thought that the actors/actresses gave strong performances but the ending of the movie was very questionable. Several times during the movie, the characters mention that at the time of the murder, the girls were 10 years old and the boys were 12 years old. In one of the final scenes, the main character points out that the rapist/killer attacked his first victim when he was only 12 years old. Although it's possible, it's highly unlikely that a 12-year-old boy would have gone through puberty by that age and be physically able to have sex. If we were talking about 13-year-old boy, it would be much more plausible.

Although children grow up much faster socially nowadays, I doubt that the onset of puberty occurs at an earlier age than years ago. Since the author is a woman, she may be unaware of the physical development of boys. Maybe she didn't realize that just because a 12 year old boy is attracted to girls, doesn't mean that he's physically able to engage in sexual activity. Or maybe the author was trying to purposely misdirect us so that we wouldn't suspect that character as the rapist/killer. Whatever the reason, the author's frequent references to the age of the rapist/killer detracted from the overall movie.

Actually, do a quick search and you'll find out that kids are in fact physically maturing earlier than ever before, including some before they reach their teens. The most likely explanation (in my view) is the range of chemicals/materials used in today's products, like Bisphenol A in clear plastics, that the body mistakes for hormones.

And yes, like someone else pointed out, the movie suggests the girls and women weren't raped. That may be why no such evidence was ever found at the scenes.

Actually boys can mature as young as 7 or 8, where they start producing the male hormone testosterone and semen. Girls can be 8 or 9 and start having there periods. In 1978 a case was documented, of a 9 year old girl being pregnant from a case of incest. In 1976 a 8 yr old boy was found to be the father of his sisters child. Obviously these are cases of abuse, these children were far to young for consent and had no real clue what was happening exactly. But they were given the knowledge of the "how to's" of sex and were able to preform the act, though against their will in these cases. Children can only grow mentally as fast as their enviornment allows, but their bodies have a time clock all on there own. It is a 100% possible that a 10yr or 12yr old boy is possible of rape.

As others have already pointed out, it's definitely possible for a 12 year-old boy to rape (in this case) or have sex.

Also, I haven't finished watching the movie, but in the book I believe there is sexual assault but not "the normal way". (Sorry, I don't know how much would be edited out on this site.) I read the book about a year ago but I think a knife or some other object was used in addition to fondling and kissing and such. I think with the first murder though it is the usual rape. I don't know if any of that is included in the movie at all. In the book, part of the motive was that the murderer wanted to prove that he was more of a man and lose his virginity first. Back then, they wouldn't have had DNA testing or anything to link someone though.

i as a female started having my period when i was 10, my childhood friend started hers at 9 and another childhood friend of mine started at 10 too. considering iam now iam my mid 20's... so this was 15 years or so ago. I do agree the kids Today get puberty more earlier. I own a teen forum/messageboard/website and even though i say no people under 13 are allowed there, there are members who are 11-12 yr old boys who talk dirty and about sex on my forum. most of it is probably total bullcrap though. lol
