Doug was too smart to fall for a Fergie setup like in the alternative ending

[spoiler]the book ending was good. fitting to the doug of the book. takes a few serious bullets from fergie then dies at claire's. doug of book isn't the shrewd operator that he is in film. he tells claire that there going to rob fenway[/spoiler]

still prefer original film ending[spoiler]in book glomesey and des get arrested. only jem gets killed. doug gets away with no money from fenway [/spoiler]

pisses me off all this doug should not have away. wasn't justified. you know some criminals do escape justice for a bit or long time (like whitey bulger). very few never get caught. there still kind of in prison. mentally they must be like jailed always looking over shoulder

I saw the Alternate Ending to "The Town" on a now-defunct youtube video, and far preferred that to the ending of the theatrical and extended versions of this film, because the Alternate Ending provided much more closure, plus it sends a far more concise, clear message: Escaping one's environmental and familial upbringing is far easier said than done.

Plus, I also think that Doug sort of got his comeuppance in the end, in that one, as his accomplices finally did.

I can, actually, first because Doug and his buddies/accomplices in crime were working for Fergie. Secondly, as I pointed out, people who perpetrate violence often end up on the receiving end of it, as well.

but doug clearly didn't trust him. there's a scene in that cut were it shows gloemesy parking the getaway car with rusty. doug talks like he is suspicious of fergue

also doug would be weary of using a car because whole police force would be out blocking routes in and out of boston

There was a scene in The Town, in which Doug and Jem went to the apartment of the two Dominican guys from the projects who'd thrown bottles at Claire as she was walking through the housing project by herself one afternoon (plus she'd had her Prius vandalized, to boot.), broke into their apartment, beat them up and seriously injured one of them, in retaliation for their having bothered Claire that afternoon. Unlike the theatrical cut of The Town, which is full of holes and leaves a great deal of stuff unconnected, the Extended cut, especially with the Alternate Ending, connects how things happened. Doug and Jem visited Kenny, a drug dealer who also lived in the housing projects, purchased some cocaine from him, and found out from Kenny which apartment on Medford Street that the Dominican men resided in, went there, broke down the door, and beat them up. One of them was knee-capped (his kneecap shot off), by Jem.

In retaliation for the break-in, beating and permanent crippling of Alex Colozzo, Alex Colozzo and his companion shot and killed Doug as he was about to get into his car and skip town.

Here's another thing too, bge95: Doug and his accomplices in crime/buddies weren't the only ones who were working for Fergie. The two Dominican guys that Doug and Jem beat up on, and seriously injured were also working for Fergie. The Town's Alternate Ending also makes that clear.

When Doug skips town for Florida without Claire, the reasons why are fairly clear:

A) Had Doug taken Claire to Florida with him, that would've been putting her life and safety at risk, since the Feds were still looking for him, which was evident when FBI Agt. Frawley said "We know what he (Doug) MacRay) looks like. We'll find him."

B) Doug is probably looking over his shoulder, since his days of hiding out down in Florida were more than likely numbered, and he'd eventually be caught (perhaps violently), and either brought to trial and made to serve a prison term for his crimes, or perhaps gunned down by the law.

C) Claire, I think, more than likely smartened up, realized that shackling up with a known violent criminal who the law was looking for was too risky, and was happy to go on in life without him.

Frankly, I think that leaving some money for Krista so that she could take care of herself and her kid was the least thing that Doug could've/should've done.

Also, I'm sure that Doug didn't leave nearly as much money for Krista as he did for Claire.

Whitey Bulger happens to be serving a life-long term in prison, and well he should be. The only problem is that he didn't get caught, tried for and charged with his crimes, and put in jail soon enough.
