Cheesy

What a waste of time. I have video games that have better graphics than this movie. Don't waste your money or your time on this on.

Since you've clearly been on another planet in the far future, you should tell us what it should look like? Sometimes you have to open your mind and not be hand-fed everything.

For what it was, it was (low budget Indie), it was entertaining...

Thanks for that Mistress. I think $8000 can officially be classed as low budget. That's about 2 seconds worth in Hollywood terms. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for sticking up for the little guy!! I'll bet on some of the hollywood big shoots, they spend more per diem for one big star on lodging and related expenses than Mark Stirtson did for his daily budget for the 10 days they spent shooting in Northern Scotland! The one low budget American horror film that seems to still be talked about, "Night of the Living Dead", was shot in the late 60s by George Romero for $60,000 and got critical acclaim. Adjusted for todays inflation that would probably compare back then for Mr Stirton having filmed "The Planet" for maybe $2000 or maybe even under $1000. It was only sheer genius that pulled off such a polished work on such a miniscule budget! Like they say, "Everyone's a critic!" Its easy to shoot off one's mouth without knowing the depth of the subject of which one speaks!!!

I liked a good number of things about this movie - the accents, much of the acting, the sets, the lack of hand holding, the bleak ending - and overlooked the special effects. I really liked the Vincent character. But I think more of an investment should have been put into the plot. Regardless of how much money the film cost to make, the story should be the primary focus. This is where George Lucas fails with millions of dollars and where this film fails with tens of dollars. Having better special effects would not have made this movie better - a better story would have. I don't know how many drafts it went through, but it seems like it could have used another couple of re-writes.

That being said, I look forward to your next film.

I agree. We should have spent more time on the script. But we were so pressed for time. Big Mike was leaving the country, so we just had to write it and get filming. I think he was gone about 2 weeks after the main shoot.

So yeah, the script is a bit of a mess. But as first films go I'm still quite fond of it. Warts and all! The new film, One Day Removals, has a much better script and more rehearsals. Honest guv!

Thanks for the comments,

Peace

This movie was made for £8000 Pounds Sterling. Appros. $12,00 - 15,000 USD. Thats probably less than one tenth of what was spent on your video game. Here is a posting i sent to one of your critics of your unwarranted critism.

Many thanks glphil. Being the director it's kinda hard for me to defend the criticism without looking petulant. But it's nice that someone else can. I do understand that the film is not perfect, but for the budget I'm still quite proud of it. Hope you get a chance to see the new one.

Cheers,

Unfortunately, some people don't understand what Independent Films are all about. There's a segment of movie-goers who only have a taste for a certain kind of film and that's their choice. They should only watch those types of films. Indies, whether low budget or big budget are not for everyone.

The same movie patrons who can't at least appreciate the effort and judge a film on the proper scale are most likely people who have NEVER created ANYTHING, been in leadership or pioneered in any area of their lives, therefore, they have "drone mentality", followers of the pack, need instructions and a pattern for just about everything in life and have been trained by big studio movies to only digest a particular type of film. They don't know how to watch foreign films, they don't know how to watch Indies, they want bright and shiney, a simple story-line all spelled out...

The movie has it's faults, but somehow the passion of those involved came through and that's what I respect most about it. If anyone has a talent and a passion to create something, I say go for it - you learn as you go. Those who criticize should take a look at George Lucas' ENTIRE portfolio and will find a few they might compare to The Planet...

Learn to have great respect for humble beginnings...

I'm not sure I'll get to see the new film unless it's released or shown in the US (ENGLISH SUBTITLES NEXT TIME MS!!!!) but I'll catch it if I can. I rented this one from a RedBox.com box at Walmart. Oh, and put a brother or two in 'em!

Good news mistesszhivago! My new film does indeed have a brother in it. And the subtitles are down to the distributor I'm afraid. I think they only included Spanish subtitles.

Fantastic! I look forward to seeing it! I LOVED the accents of Planet, but htey were thick and I like to hear/read EVERY line of a movie. Keep pursuing your dreams! There will be plenty to support you!

Scotland has brothers?

reply

There's people of all races in Scotland, but most of the black and asian guys we knew were too smart to go filming on a freezing beach for 2 weeks.

That's why a scot's natural skin colour is blue.

Just watched the dvd from Netflix and think for the budget you guys did a great job! The acting was pretty good and if the script had made more sense it would have made a huge improvement, but I know that time constraints can booger up the works. I hope you get to make some more movies and have more time to work on them!
