This was already discussed before but I'm doing it again

Why would Richard Donner make his own cut of Superman II and put such a stupid ending on it? I know when he made Superman back in 1977-78 he was making both films at the same time, but the producers wanted him to finish the first one and finish the second one later so they could get it released, so to cut corners he put time reversal scene that was planned for Superman II at the end of Superman The Movie, which didn't really work. Then he was replaced by Richard Lester to figure out how to do Superman II.

The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II is much better, and the time reversal makes more sense in this movie, but the stupid diner scene at the end although funny did not belong there.

If Superman reversed time none of what happened in Superman II ever happened, so the diner scene where he got his butt kicked didn't happen, so him going back to the diner for revenge didn't mean squat. No would even have knew who he was, just nerdy Clark Kent with his big glasses (a very clever disguise for any super heroes, Lol).

Don't even know why I brought this up, bored I guess!

Final thought watch the Richard Donner cut from 2006 instead of the original Superman II from 1980. Except for the nonsensical ending its much better!

First of all it did happen to him. He did get his butt kicked so he knew about it and that's what counts. Besides, He didn't go back for revenge, he went back to put a bully in his place. I agree the only part that looks out of place is when the waitress looks at him like WTF and he says he's been working out. But what you should really be complaining about was that godawful spin the world and reverse time element. It's so fkn idiotic that it knocks the film a couple of stars for me and was my main qualm with the original film.

The diner scene is one of the most beloved scenes of the film. You cannot argue that and I can understand why Donner shoehorned it in there. However the reversal of time was completely unnecessary and I don't under why they felt they needed to include this in this film at all. At least in the first film Lois died so although still fkn dumb, you could understand why they did it.

^ this is where you're wrong. He didn't do it to cut corners - he didn't want that scene in the movie at all! He wanted to end Superman: The Movie on a cliffhanger. But the producers were worried about the first movie being a flop, at which point it was not financially feasible to continue the second film, and since they spent $10 million (1977 money) on the time reversal sequence, they demanded it to be featured in the 1978 Superman movie. So Donner planned to come up with a new ending for II, but was fired.

In the commentary for the Richard Donner cut, Richard Donner planned to use Richard Lester's amnesia kiss but the others decided it was too out of place and simply reused the time reversal sequence, as it was the intended ending for Superman II. It wasn't cutting corners, it was due to the money spent of that scene.
