Who WAS this guy, anyway?

Did they ever explain who "Charlie" was or why he became so demented? I ask only because these lifetime movies generally explain these things with some generic childhood trauma, abandonment issues, etc.

I didn't catch the whole story since I was out of the room for part of the scene, but Charlie does tell the boy a story about a young prince whose older cousin (I think it was) takes him to a boat, where he hurts him. Obviously, he's referring to being molested though the boy doesn't understand. Later, he says that the cousin was drowned~obviously him taking vengeance.
