shareThey definitely use exterior shots of Pittsburgh as the city! Even if they actually film in CA, because in the commercials, you definitely see PPG Place, a known Pittsburgh skyscraper

shareNo, we filmed the entire show in Hawthorne, Ca @ Robert F. Kennedy hospital. (it closed in 1996). The diner is also in Hawthorne, a place called Chips Diner. Kate's house is in Long Beach.
shareThe real question is what city is the setting Heartland. It may be filmed in Hawthorne, CA but there are way to many references to and about Pittsburgh. Does any one know if Heartland is set in Pittsburgh. They have the Pirates, talked about Squirrel Hill which is a section of Pittsburgh and going to dinner at Christopher's a restaurant in Pittsburgh.

shareAnd for anyone who doesn't know where Hawthorne, CA is, it's near Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
Additional trivia regarding the Hawthorne location: it serves as all the "other hospitals" the show's characters often must travel to (such as the West Virgina hospital where Kate and Jonas go to retrieve a liver. I know that one kinda well for some odd reason...).

My best guess on the possible Calgary filming is it was for the original pilot episode. Then after the show was given the greenlight, everything changed to "L.A."
Just my guess. Not even an hypothesis.
I do know for sure episode, "The Places You'll Go" was all done in the L.A. area.

nope, The TV show about the horse, also called Heartland was shot in Calgary. "Heartland" with Treat Williams is shot in Hawthorne. Pilot was shot in Pasadena.

It makes sense that it's set in Pittsburgh considering that the Univ. of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is considered the top transplant center in the country.
