You wanna know what this is?

The Children's Party at the Palace was an event held at Buckingham Palace on June 25, 2006 in honour of the 80th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. The event, which had the theme British children's literature, was attended by 2,000 children and 1,000 adults who were chosen through a national ballot. On arrival all guests received a purple hamper with snacks put together by Jamie Oliver. For the occasion, the palace grounds were transformed into scenes from children's books including places like the Hundred Acre Wood and 80 costumed characters and a model of the BFG sitting at a huge piano. The grounds also had an author's corner where authors like J.K. Rowling, Philip Pullman, Eric Hill and Raymond Briggs read from their books and signed autographs.

It's a great shame that the credits didn't include the cast list. I've submitted all the actors and characters that I recognised, but there are many that I didn't recognise, probably because I'm not clued-up on who's who in today's children's television. Can anyone help:

- Who played the Famous Five characters?
- Who played Mary Poppins?
- What parts did June Brown, Pam Ferris, Jerry Hall and Alan Titchmarsh play?

reply

The Famous Five characters were played by the (then) presenters of the long-running BBC children's show, Blue Peter. They are Konnie Huq, Zoe Salmon, Gethin Jones and Matt Baker (who left the show a couple of days after the party was broadcast). Timmy the Dog was played by one of the Blue Peter pets.

Thank you. I've just submitted Gethin Jones and Matt Baker; Konnie Huq and Zoe Salmon were already there.

Mary Poppins was played by Scarlett Strallen as she was in the West End musical at the time of the show

June Brown and Pam Ferris played Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge respectively from James and the Giant Peach

Alan Titchmarsh played Percy the Park Keeper from the series of books by Nick Butterworth

Jerry Hall was the Pirate Queen from the book by Emily Arnold McCully

Hope that helps

Thanks. I've added them to the cast list.

Pam St Clements played Aunt Sponge.
Derrr! Of course it was Pam St Clements! Why did I think it was Pam Ferris? I've just corrected the cast accordingly.
