Why did the dad brush Derek off at the end of the film?

I don't understand why the dad would brush Derek off at the end of the film and why he wasn't interested in what Derek had to say.

Because Derek was always trying to be the center of attention and this was finally Brennan's moment and the dad recognized that too. Of course it a was all played for laughs.
