Jack is dead?

Look at this photo, is it him on the left?

Without looking I know which photo you're referring to and I thought the same thing at the time. I would say the answer's no though, as he interacted with quite a lot of people throughout the film, school security guard, Paul and teachers etc. I did think him being dead would explain his seriously depressed mother, but other evidence says he's alive (and sadly going to turn into another Deacon...)

I don't know, the fact that is in the shot like that (along with the lady) it's strange.

That is definitely not him in that picture. That boy is a few years older and has brown, curly hair. Jack is younger with straight, blonde hair.

Plus, a schoolful of people saw Paul (Justin Long) hit Jack, along with other things that happen in the film that show Jack is alive. Everyone in the film is alive, for that matter. :-)

I agree, N91 ... that IS a picture of Jack! All thru the movie, people saw dead (supposedly) people, so some people could obviously see Jack. I think Deacon kept him around as a protege, to sorta pick up the mantle. Every time Deacon was in his own room, all those folks kept "mumbling" to him ... so I guess their souls still hung around ... like Jack?
