If anyone seen the original Pink Panther series...

Would probably know to avoid this movie like the black plague. The first one was an utter disaster of a classic which also drags Martin's already dwindling career further down. What happened to Steve?? Used to be funny as hell now he is just rampantly destroying a cherished series... poor Sellers...

reply

It's quite ironic, really. Martin has admitted he only takes large paycheck, intellectually bankrupt movies like this and 'Cheaper by the Dozen' so he can afford to indulge his passion of buying expensive art. He destroys art to buy art.
Hell, good for him if it makes him happy-after all, no-ones forcing us to watch this - I just wish he'd work harder like he used to - when he's good, he's pretty great. When he doesn't give a toss and just wants a check, he's abysmal. Sellers ended up hating working for Edwards and being known for Clouseau, but the least you can say is he gave his all to every one he made so the audiences would be happy - and he ended up making some of the funniest movies in cinema history, whether he rated them himself or not. The guy was a professional.

It's a tender love song, very beautiful. {Whats it called?} Lick my love pump.

Agreed.

Yes it's quite sad to see this, thespians you've grown up with and admire, to see them prostitute themselves in such a non-caring manner, Soiling the end of there careers.

There are some thou that I have recovered my great admiration for, like Stallone who now takes his filming very passionately.

Then there are people like Martin and Steven Seagal

reply

It wouldn't be such a disappointment if he alternated the big paycheck movies with better, small budget movies, like some other actors.

reply

the problem with classics is that nobody watches them anymore...
i've never watched any of those shows and i wouldn't want to watch them despite your 10/10 rating because i have the impression that films from the 60s are all slow and have largely boring slapstick humor...
i'm pretty sure my friends will think like me, afterall who walks into a video stall and asks for a film from 1960!?
where on earth are you going to find a 1960 film anyway!?

this is where modern remakes come in... and if you guys keep on bashing modern remakes we'll never be able to watch such movies anymore

It's perfectly normal for youngsters to think they know it all. For you and your friends at this point of your life, mindless violence and random explosions are all you need in a movie. I completely understand and am happy for you.

But in about five or ten years you'll mature a bit and begin to care about the quality of a movie and you'll begin looking for the old movies. I just hope by then the rental shops still carry movies from the 60s.

I just saw the movie and I must admit i liked it much better than the first movie (played by Steve Martin). I have seen a lot of pink panther movies with Sellers and they were not always funny, but I think the character is played better by Sellers. But I think Martin is doing a good job! Most people say the origional film is always the best. In this case I really doubt that. Ofcourse the first one is a classic, but the sequels aren't that good. I say the pink panther 2 ( with Martin) is better. Most times it is just a nostalgic thing that makes the original better.

there is only 1 funny Sellers Pink Panther movie the rest are dreadfully unfunny. This is not as good as the jerk or man with 2 brains but its wacky and stupid everything i want from a Martin film

reply

Sellers' Pink Panther was also wacky and stupid. A lot of slapstick humor and funny accidents. I like Martin's version too.

reply

You haven't seen the best one in the series then:"Return of the Pink Panther"
At least for me it's the funniest movie in the PP series ^^

I bought four of the original films sometime ago, but haven't gotten around to watching them. A SHOT IN THE DARK, REVENGE, STRIKES AGAIN, and that INSPECTOR CLOUSUE movie, one without Sellers. However his name is spelt.

I've heard good things about SHOT IN THE DARK, but still have other films to watch first. Don't know when I'll get around to it.

The scene where Clouseau has a martial arts battle with Ponton's sons is very reminiscent of the old days, when Sellers would trash the apartment while doing battle with his valet Cato (played by Burt Kwouk).

During the golden age of the sequels, Clouseau would trash the apartment to keep Cato alert in a "battle of wits" while practicing their martial arts skills and wrecking the furniture.

This scene obviously pays homage to the classic Pink Panther sequels and their slapstick humor.

reply

It would be interesting to see if Rowan Atkinson would make a good Clouseau.

His performance in Johnny English is reminiscent of Clouseau's over-confidence and pride.

PP2 is also unique since it features John Cleese as Commissioner Dreyfus; Cleese makes the "hamburger" scene more interesting since he's the first predominantly British actor to play Dreyfus.

The differences in accents makes it quite interesting, especially when Dreyfus and Clouseau have difficulties agreeing on how to say "hamburger"....

I've seen both Steve Martin films, also TRIAL, CURSE, and SHOT IN THE DARK. "Shot" and "Curse" aren't too bad, but I still enjoyed Steve's Panther movies. Maybe cause I saw them before SHOT.

I always remember back in the day they use to show Pink Panther movies and now you do not see it on cable TV at all unless you get some network that will show these classic films. Yes I have to say that Steve Martin is doing better than The Son Of The Pink Panther.

I've seen the original series. And I think this one is as good as the original. The original series had some very, very bad episodes.
