What does the vision of the train mean?

First of all I loved this film. One of Wes's best.

I was just wondering what the following scene means/symbolises:

When the boys communicate speechlessly with their mother we see inside the train where Rita, a pregnant Alice, Bill Murray, Portman and the Tiger are.

I have a little inkling but it'd be nice to know.
