This is *beep*

I really don't understand why they won't put it on DVD. The show was great! and I really think it would sell. Who evers Idea it was to just have those Telenovels run that one time and never been seen again seriusly deosn't know anything about making money.

Well, the thing is, Fox/MNTV didnt make any money with the telenovelas. They lost about $2 million an episode. It wouldn't make any sense to put them about on DVD because they probably wouldn't sell. It ran for 65 episodes and that is the equalivent to 4-5 seasons. It is really too bad the experiemnt failed.

I appreciate any TV executive who is thinking outside the box right now. However, seeing the decline in daytime soap ratings, it doesn't make sense that they air a soap opera one hour every night for months.

People are so busy in the evenings these days that they TIVO/DVR their once a week favorite show to view later. If you DVR a show which requires a nightly commitment, that means on the weekends you'd have 5 hours of episodes to view in order to stay caught up.

It's a huge time commitment which I don't think the American public is willing to make. They barely make it with once-a-week traditional TV shows. That's one of the reasons why LOST almost didn't make it.

Here's the thing. American execs saw how Spanish telenovelas were beating American TV programs in some areas. They decided to try their luck by making versions of telenovelas.

The reason it failed: Using actors with little experience, sets were built cheaply (the studio they used was, and even Wal-mart clothes was used for wardrobe. Also, something was lost in translation with the scripts.

You pretty much hit it on the head by saying that it is hard for people to commit to a nightly drama (I sometime DVRed them because other shows were on). We are a very strange country when it comes to soaps, as we watch them in the day. However, in places like Mexico (telenovelas), England (Eastenders, Coronation Street), and Australia (Neighbours, Home & Away), it is nightly viewing. Somehow, it is not within us to watch a nightly soap. And I think the thing is we were trained that way by television, just as the English and Aussies were trained to watch them at night.

Ok, I'll buy that the cheesy Wal-Mart clothing tie-in was targeting the wrong segment of the US population who tuned-in to these soap operas. However, there is a group of us who watched and really, really enjoyed Watch Over Me.

I thought the lead of Jack Porter, played by actor Todd Cahoon, did a phenomenal job.

I never got the sense that the production and sets were cheesy or low value. Whatever the budget, I did not get a sense of low quality with Watch Over Me (except maybe the cast of unknowns or overseas stars).

The script was pretty good and the pacing of the program excellent. Was it a bit far-fetched? Probably, but no more so than LOST. And the finale still has us talking (especially the Casper Van Dien shot in jail at the end which was very clever.)

I was really sucked it, but happy to get my life back when the show was over. I don't have a DVR/TIVO option. LOL!

That time commitment would've been too much for the average American viewer. We do like soaps at night. Remember how popular Dallas and Dynasty were? Maybe that era of big hair, big budgets cat fights and shoulder pads is over?

Yeah, but those were only once a week and only twentysome episodes a season. I am talking about nightly episodes that are year round. Eastenders runs four nights a week, Emmerdale runs six. It is not in us to watch a nightly soap.

I did like the MNTV telenovelas. I am only speaking from a television industry (which I am not in) point of view. They didn't work because of all of the cost cutting they did.

I wasnt knocking anything about them. Just looking from a different POV. I did like Desire, Wicked Wicked Games and Watch Over Me.

Like you, I was just happy to get my life back after they were over. I was following enough soaps from England.
