Laughable.

I'm not denying or questioning the credibility of the poltical content of the film or the message it was trying to get across, but the film itself is crap. The dialogue in places is very poor, the delivery of said dialogue is even poorer, and alot of the "hard hitting" scenes are so ham fisted that they miss the mark (no pun intended) and don't register at all. I didn't relate to ANY character, although argubly this is perhaps the point. I could draw paralells to Platoon, but that would be unfair because Platoon is acctually good.

Did this all really happen? Is this an accurate representation of attitudes in Iraq? Maybe. I'm not questioning that. I'm questioning the film itself because it's just genuinley "bad".

Again, to draw paralells, Platoon was critical of the war in Vietnam and the ideas of troops without being too ham fisted or being chock full of unlikeable wankers, like in the Mark of Cain.

Not sure if anyone agree's because i've seen mostly positive reviews for this film on IMDB so far (bar a few silly american patriot types) but this is pretty much what I took away from this film which is unfortunate because it really had some potential.

Completely agree. Some of the character motivation didn't work at all - why did the guy who initially refused to beat up the Kurdish petrol guy suddenly go all gungho the next time the issue came up?

I think a film showing what happens when someone stands up to the majority and refuses on principle to go along with things would be much more interesting; it would actually show you the pressure they were under and how the need to continue to 'belong' to a group like an army regiment can override your own morals. This film "told" you this rather than showing you.

For a great TV drama about the effect of war on soldiers (albeit one in which they're the observers rather than the aggressors), I can highly recommend "Warriors". It's about the UN peacekeeping force in Bosnia, and it's absolutely devasting. I couldn't help comparing the two, to Mark of Cain's detriment I'm afraid...

This was so badly made it was funny for the wrong reasons, rarely had there been a TV show with so much unintentional comedy. The torture scene had me rolling on the floor with tears.
