Why is everyone suffering from mass hysteria? Why is everyone pretending to like this? This film is HORRIFYING. The first 15 minutes deal with Pee-Wee talking to that guy from Magic Mike, and there's even a mention of his role in Magic Mike. There is zero imagination. I'm 30 minutes in, when he meets the female bank robbers, and I'm about to turn it off, and never turn it on again. This makes me so sad, because Pee-Wee's Big Adventure is one of my favorite movies. I grew up on Pee-Wee's Playhouse. But this is just so awful. I hate having to write this.

Now who's hysterical? If anything, this new movie is closer to the roots of the character than the watered-down Saturday morning kids show version you have rose-tinted glasses for. BTW, I also enjoyed "PW'sBA"(Big Top...not so much) and the Saturday morning show so it's not like I'm "hating just to hate". **edit**Oh yeah! Not to mention he was in a few Cheech & Chong movies. He may have been Pee Wee first but he will always be the Hamburgah King to me. lol

I'm not denying the character was initially risque -- I just never realized he was fawning over dudes so much. As a matter of fact -- he WASN'T. Making him such a blatant gay guy kind of detracts from the innocence of the character, no?

Like certain scenes in "Big Adventure" between him and Mickey(Judd Omen) couldn't be seen as a little "gay"? Especially when he dresses up and pretends to be a girl to get past the roadblock. Seriously, Mickey is an escaped con(and you know what's supposed to occur between convicts ;D) and there is PW getting a little TOO into it and cuddling up to him after they get past. Then Mickey gives this aside glance like he's considering. lol

Okay, point taken, you're right about about the scene with the escaped convict. But at the same time, the impetus for his journey wasn't celebrating the birthday of a "Magic Mike" actor. And I'm now 20 minutes away from the end, and this is still *beep* horrible beyond words. I'm actually really angry, because this film has tainted everything Pee-Wee that came before this, for me. It actually removed something from me that was a cherished part of my childhood. I thought it would bring me joy, and it brought me depression.

I'm with you. I'm going to write to my congressman about getting trigger warnings added at the beginning of movies and tv shows. This kind of mental abuse must stop.

I wish Joe Manginello had been playing a character and not himself. I thought mentioning True Blood and Magic Mike was just too zeitgeist.

I thought it was okay. Not great. Not terrible. Just okay. My expectations weren't super high, as I know at the age of 64 Paul Reubens was not going to be able to pull off something with as much spunk and originality as Big Adventure. This one reminded me alot more of Big Top Pee-Wee. It has a similar tone.

That said, I caught the live Pee-Wee broadway revival of Playhouse the other day on TV ( can't remember what channel, HBO Family or Showtime I think) and it was absolutely fantastic. Just wonderful.

Agreed! I preferred Pee Wee on Broadway.
