Is this a sequel or independent movie?

I liked this movie, but when I was watching it, I was wondering about a couple things. Diane Salinger seems to play a different character in this movie - She isn't Simone from the first movie. Also, Pee-Wee acted like he never liked to leave, but he had left at least once before (Pee-Wee's Big Adventure). So I was wondering, is this supposed to be a direct sequel to his previous 2 movies, or is this supposed to be an independent movie, as if there had been no Pee-Wee movies before?

Comletely independant movie. Different charactor.
