Gay Vibes

There was something very homo-centric with Pee Wee and Joe. His daydreams, and the ride off into the sunset at the end.

Unfortunately i agree with you.

It's a real pity they didn't take that treehouse scene to its inevitable conclusion...some hard-core man-on-man biblical-incorrectness and blasphemy would have been delightful.

Jesus might not have approved,

..but so what????

What's he done for YOU lately?

reply

That would have been amazing actually. Credits roll while Pee-wee's getting his salad tossed.

For sure Gay Vibes. I just don't think that was the way to go. Just like in Big Top Pee Wee when he had sex with that woman...should not have gone there either. Paul Reubens missed the boat on the sexuality. Just like another said, Pee Week needs to be a Man Child. Girls are gross. He man-crushed too much on Joe. Big Adventure got this right.

It rubs the butter on it's skin, y'all.

I didn't get that. Pee-wee is a kind of developmentally delayed 60 y.o. who has never left Fairville, probably yearns to mature, and sees Joe as a mentor, big brother, or father figure. If it weren't for him, he'd still be trapped in his small world.

He goes from playing a plastic clarinet to learning how to ride a motorcycle.

"Sorry. If I've not responded to you either it wasn't necessary or I've set you to Ignore."

I don't necessarily agree that there was a strong gay vibe but the two definitely had a surprising amount of chemistry together. I suppose you can read into it however you will, but if you imagine them both as ten year olds (which is the energy they are trying to protray) then it just seems like youthful friendship without reservations like adults have.

Reubens knows what he's doing. I think he has fun with the gay and bisexual innuendo but what it comes down to is Pee-wee is supposed to be a man child that never reached puberty. He thinks girls are gross and boys are cool.

The gay innuendo was strong in Big Holiday but it's always been there. It really just comes down to friendship. We are watching Pee-wee with adult eyes and thinking in our heads that if a man likes another man that deeply, he must be gay. That's the wrong way to think and Reubens is trying to show the innocence that we lost from our childhood.

I think Paul Reubens knew that adults would get a gay vibe from the way their friendship was shown (also how he refused Emily the Librarian's invitation) so he made sure to have Pee-Wee kiss the bank robber Pee-Wee, when she kissed his cheek, he "went for it" and kissed her on the lips. The Pee-Wee Herman character is straight, he is just innocent. Same as in Big Adventure when Dottie came to pick him up at Warner Bros studios, Dottie went to kiss him, and he went straight for Speck his dog, oblivious. But he ended up with Dottie at the end when she realized the way to his heart was through his puppy. That Dottie, she's pretty radical with bikes.

By the way, didn't you LOVE how Simone ended up in the hot tub with Grizzly Bear Daniels in this one? I know you're right, but... But what? Everyone I know has a big "But." Come on, Simone, let's talk about your big "But."

"Enough of that technical talk, Foo!"

reply

You're all missing something - Peewee might have been an innocent sitting in that tree house, but Joe wasn't! Seriously gay vibes.
