Rumors are piling up; Ironside won't be back

Go here to read the latest rumor about it: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/18/rumor-the-reasons-behind-ironsides-s plinter-cell-split/

God, I really hope this isn't true. Someone say it ain't so... I'll be greatly disappointed if it is.

Man, if they take Michael Ironside from Splinter Cell, they'll basically ruin Sam Fisher.

I know, right? Ironside IS Fisher.

If the reason really is because Ironside wants more money... I say give it to him! There's no doubt in my mind this will be the last Splinter Cell anyway.

At least as far as Fisher being the main character, I hope they make more.

Conviction may have been brought back to the drawing board so who knows what's going to happen, but not having Ironside as Sam is sh!tty, it just wouldn't be the same.

I also read somewhere it has nothing to do with the money for Ironside, Ironside isn't stingy I just think Ubisoft is just being cheap.

reply

Well ironside better be doing Sam's voice. I hear he really enjoys voicing him.

Ya know, there are SO many rumors flying around about Conviction, I have no idea what to believe anymore.

I'll try not to buy into them and just wait it out and see what actually does happen.

Like it's been said before, and I think we can all agree here, Ironside is Fisher.

And, to me, if they were to make another Splinter Cell game without Sam, I might be interested, but Sam really appealed to me when I bought the very first Splinter Cell and it's grown to where he is easily my favorite video game character.

I've heard the same thing, I think I watched a video of an interview where he said that. I'm not surprised, even though it's just a video game and doesn't have as much dialoge as a movie I can see him liking the character, Sam is a cool and interesting dude.

I wouldn't mind a Splinter Cell series with another protaganist. I prefer Sam and all because I have grown to really like his character, just like you from the very first game, but a new guy or even a woman would be cool as long as they make the character as interesting, likeable, and entertaining as Sam. I guess for realism they probably wouldn't use a female lead for the role, but some woman can be just as bad ass as any man, just not quite as strong, doesn't mean they can't fight.

I really don't want a new protagonist, but if Ironside doesn't come back, that may be our only choice. No other actor out there can do Sam's voice like Michael Ironside.

You gotta understand that Sam is no Spring Chicken anymore, this kind of work is tough enough as it is. Granted a man in his early 50's can handle it if in good shape, but they can't do it forever. If they want Splinter Cell to continue on a linear path like all the games have, eventually they will have to find a new protagonist to fill in the work, as you know since Chaos Theory they have been training more Splinter Cells to add to the team, it's only a matter of time till Sam retires or is God forbid killed or captured.

I see no issue in a new hero for the Splinter Cell universe, it's only natural that someone comes in to try and fill Sam's boots.

Perhaps this is one reason why they are starting Conviction over from scratch, since Ironside won't be voicing the character they need to make another story entirely. They probably are well aware in the disappointment of fans if Ironside no longer voices Sam so they are making an entirely new character. I don't understand why else they would give up after so much work put into the new game, it's very disappointing.

reply

I hope they don't kill our Sam.

reply

I hope not too, but he really doesn't have much left to live for other than himself a few friends in the NSA and his country, his wife died of cancer and his duaghter was killed by a drunk driver, he may end up dying a hero in the end for any one of those which might be fitting.

reply

I have to say that maybe the reasons why the took Conviction back to the drawing board is that maybe Ironside decided to play Sam one more time and to also fix up the kinks to it as well. I think that they should just have this be Sam's last game, and have the next one move on to a new character. Have it be one of the two from the co-op in Chaos Theory or have both it would make the new one be more of a mix of Splinter Cell/Army of Two style to it.
