Arn

So who would you want to see playing Arn?

Personally I would like to see Alexander Skarsgård as young Arn and Stellan Skarsgård as old Arn.

reply

I have heard rumours that they are going to use a Danish actor to play Arn, do to Arn's Danish accent.

They talked about Mads Mikkelsen, Nikolaj Costau-Waldau and David Owe.
Out of the three i believe I prefer David Owe as Arn.

reply

Just got information that Gustaf Skarsgård has had a meeting with the producers and are will likely take on the role as Arn. For the old Arn they are considering Stellan Skarsgård. Seems like my wish might came true after all (other than I would have preferred Alexander instead of Gustaf, but any of them is good enough).

They have decided that Ola Rapace was to old to play young Arn convincing, and to young to play the old one.

reply

Old Arn? When he is in Jerusalem he goes from age 27 to 42. Can Stellan really be 27 years old? Or can Gustaf be 42? At what age will Stellan take over?

reply

I bet he will take over somewhere in Jerusalem.
Or I wouldnt be suprised if they tell most of the first book in flashbacks and its Gustaf in those sequences.

reply

Flashbacks? Why would they do that?

reply

Why not? Doing that might save them some room when trying to fit as much as possible from the books into the movies. But I dont know.

reply

You actually never see Arn as an 27 year old templar. He just pops up into the story as captain of Gaza. He just tells of his years in service.

reply

But when he pops up as captain of Gaza he IS 27 years old. And when he leaves the Holy land he is 41.

reply

This is how i should have done it: The first movie is the first book eq Arns childhood and grownups. The second movie is the third book (riket vid vägens slut, I dont know the english title sorry!) with a lot of telling and a few glimses from the second book. That would be the cheapest way to present what hapend in the holy land who should be fairly expensive to recreate as a third movie. It could also be a couple of dreaming sequensis where the old arn dreams about his time in the holy land. I think thats about what the swedish film institute could afford in term of money.

Right done this is going to be a great movie! Johan

reply

Dont worry about the swedish film institute since this is a Nordic Venture I am sure the Danes are gonna throw in a dime or two.

reply

Arn is not 41 when he leaves Outremer. Remember he has to do penance for twenty years and he is 17 when he leaves. SO after 20 years he can only be 37 (38-39 if calculated the travels to and back along)

reply

Well if I remember correctly Arn is stuck in Outremer for more than twenty years..

reply

He is 41 when he leaves Outremer in 1191. He arrives in Sweden in 1192.

reply

This will be so great, hope they can get the whole Skarsgård family to play Arn during his different ages thruout the movies, Stellan as a knight in Israel and back hoime in Sweden, Alexander when he is young and has the love affair.

lets just not hope that Persbrandt takes the role like I heard

And I got the perfect munk (can't remeber hsi name but the one who teaches Arn) Gerard Depardiue

reply

Yes.. But maybe you should keep in mind that on the day his penance ends, Saladin "finds" him and makes him his adviser.

That and his journey apparently takes about five years..

reply

Gustaf may be more fitting, being born 1980. Remember that Arn, when being sent to Jerusalem, is only 17 and serves for 20 years. I think he's somewhere between 39 and 41 (was it 2 or 4 years later he got home?).

reply

yeah but Alexander looks more like Stelan, tall, lean and mean

A more important question would be:
Is it possible to find an Actor with the right skills?
He should be able to speak many languages and sing and ride, fight, using both hands equally good, strong, not too tall and many more important things to the character of Arn.

I believe it's important to stay true to Jan Guillou's idea of a "Forrest Gump". A fictisious character with the right skills, meeting the "real" men of the time, shaping and creating Sweden and sad to say; kicking Denmarks ass to create a country of their own.

This is my first post, but just proves that I too can't wait for these books to come on the big screen.

reply

You´re right. Stellan Skarsgård is a terrific actor, but I´m not sure he meets all the qualifications. And besides, isn´t he to old to be a 41 year old Arn?

And about Arns experiences in the holy land: as someone said before me, that whole bit will hopefully be skipped for most part, because this is a Swedish movie, remember, with a swedish budget. I would much rather see them put money into making the Lena and Gestilren-battlescenes realistic and worth remembering.

It´s called the american dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.

reply

Yea, but still, it would be nice to see 10 squadrons of templars in outremer charging against the forces of saladin.

Would also be nice to see templars NOT being evil bad guys like they're wrongfully depicted in kingdom of heaven, but that's a whole another discussion...

reply

Oh yes. Absolutely. I´ve been dying to see a realistic, succesful charge of heavy knights against infantry. Closest thing we´ve gotten was Braveheart, but the knights there got their asses kicked pretty bad.
Unfortunately I think such a thing is beyond a swedish budget, but you never know.

reply

There will be a lot of scenes from Outremer. This is the most expensive Swedish movie ever made. Several countries are co-financing it and it will be shown internationally.

reply

Wow, i read the books a month ago and now they're going to make a movie on it. I've heard they are only going to make two movies, instead of three. Is that true?

reply

Yeah..
Two movies /only/, but see it this way...
It is far better then /no/ movies. ;)

And I think Stellan can pull off a 41 year old Arn.
Consider that Arn has spent 20 years in Outremer.
A 41 year old in those days, does not look like a 41 year old in present time.
Weather, and harsh living takes its toll on how you look.

More importantly is, who will play Birger Jarl? and who will play (can't remember the name) the nun who marries Arn. She will need to be something...

reply

As for Birger Magnusson Jarl, I think that this set of movies will finish after the third book where he is farly young and would (If he is inkluded) needed a child to play him. If there is no planes to make a movie on the fourth book I see no need to inklude Birger as anything more then arns child. Johan

reply

I think he ment Birger Brosa. Arn's uncle not his grandson Birger.

reply

Has the exact budget been established yet?

Edit: read on arnmagnusson.se that it will be 210 miljon skr. I´m assuming that´s for both movies combined? If so I really hope they don´t put too much into the holy-land scenes. Those will eat up funds pretty quickly.

reply

At least they will apparently be able to use some of the sets from Kingdom of Heaven, which is good because a) That movie looked tremendous and b)It should cut the expenses significantly. Also I really really hope they are smart enough to use a computer program such as Massive, which was used for the battle scenes in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and others), to create truly epic battles. For me, nothing kills a historical movie more efficiently than battles that are far too small in scale.

reply

This is sweden not Hollywood. I do hope they use some cg:s in the masscenes but dont except it. Also except more storytelling than battle/action. The core in the books is about christianity and the muslims in the middle age not the holy wars and danish/swedish wars. I think they would focus on smallside actionscenes such as Arn riding dowm the thiefs in the opening of the second book rather than having a lot of spectakular massbattle scenes. I would focus on Lena and Gestrilien in the third book as the action highlight and build the action/war scenes towards that top, throughout the two movies. Johan

reply

I think the bet choice for Arn would be Liam Norberg. He would be a trustworthy Templar! As for Saladin maybe Ray Jones IV? I think he would rule.

My name is Arn :)

Naw, I'm from Norway ;)

My mate bought me the 4th book (Sagan om Arn) as a joke for my 20th birthday :)
I started to read it, but figured I should rather start with the first one. Can't say I regret it :)

If it's half as good as the books, it would still turn out better than most movies ;)

I hope they don't make it too "shiny" tho.. Too many medieval films lack dirt. Dirt is good. Sweat too.
