Can someone explain this to me? Question about movie length (Spoiler)

I'm confused. Not about the story, but about the film release itself.

I watched Arn: The Knight Templar that runs for 2 hours and 13 minutes (including credits).

The film ends with Arn's death in Cecilia's arm after he did that battle against Ebbe. I assume the film finished there with the hero's death.

But I was expecting Arn to be 2 films (The Knight Templar and The Kingdom at Road's End). But now I think I had seen both films in one go?

Can anybody explain this to me... cause according to the imdb page of both film, then it should be 139 minutes (knight templar) + 128 minutes(kingdom road's end) = approx 4.5 hours? But I watched the first one that is only 2.2 hours and it already ends with Arn's death??

Did they cut it and rolled the two film into one and release it?

Does the 2nd film has a different story?

Edit: I'm so sorry for the guys who got spoiled because of me. I almost never come back to my own thread after a few days but I edited it now with spoiler warning just so no more people got spoilers.

I'm no expert on this film but where I live they just showed this as a six-part tv-show, recut from the same material, making the whole thing about six hours long. I have never seen either of those films, but I would think that they are both made from the same material. What the difference is, I have no clue.

Please issue a spoiler warning, and also it'd be nice if people would be a little more specific in their thread titles, for example "Two films in one?" might have been a nice title for yours. Not being nasty, just saying that you will probably get more informative replies by 'advertising' your query a little better

Well, there no need for me to watch "Arn: The Kingdom at Road's End" now you've spoiled the ending for me bleukreuz, you idiot.

i was about to watch it....but now i need not ...this gentleman just f*c**d my movietime !!!

I understand about the spoiler issue but if you haven't seen the show as yet, why would you come on a discussion board? I see episodes of shows advertised and I stay away from the board until I see the episode. Last week I started to watch Southland's last episode and realised I hadnt seen it yet, and quickly went off. What you should do is watch the show first and then come on the IMDB board. That makes sense to me. Cause some people assume you've already seen the show and come to discuss it.

This is my signature and I'm sticking to it. lol

Dude, you are not getting it.

I checked this discussion board after seeing 'Arn: The Knight Templar', which THIS is the discussion board for.

'Arn: The Kingdom at Road's End' was spoiled, which is the continuing saga of Arn.

okay Martin, I got it. It seems the movie was rolled into one, hence the problem. BTW, I'm not a dude. lol

But doesn't Arn: The Knight Templar cover The Kingdom of Roads End? I just watched the 2007 film and the plot points seem the same to me.

reply

Yes, I can explain. What you have watched is the international version of the movies, re-edited into one movie of 128 minutes. The IMDb (wrongly) states that this film is 139 minutes (in fact, it's 133), but this is part 1 of the Swedish version, where the story is divided into two parts. The list of faulty conceptions about these movies that the IMDb has is endless. For a start, they don't have an entry for the international movie, nor for the special cuts of the two Swedish version movies, where Arn's childhood has been edited out and his life as an adult is told in two films (94 and 99 minutes respectively). They also wrongly state that the TV series follows the films, whereas in reality it is only the two Swedish version films sliced into a six-part series.

But don't fret. As I have bought all versions on DVD (and have now begun watching them) I will soon start feeding them the correct information (to bring order in the cast list for a start) and hopefully, in a few weeks, the IMDb will actually state the correct information about all the film and TV versions. Hopefully, it will be clear to you then.

Thanks, Oldenbur, for the clarification. The information available about this film is not clear and the official website for this film (http://www.arnmagnusson.se/page/id___515.php) does not help. The books were written as a trilogy, then there were 2 films (2007 and 2008), and finally the "international" version of the film was released in 2009. Now that I've finished watching the 133-minute international version on Netflix here in the US (which I enjoyed immensely), I now feel cheated out of the additional 134 minutes!

As for those who swore at the original poster for not typing "spoiler" -- what a shame that you'd skip watching a great movie for something as simple and as predictable as a hero's death. Show some courtesy to your fellow film-lovers.

The first version of the movie is divided in 2 parts, from Arn's childhood in detail to the end of the saga (more than 4 hours of movie).

The international and more known dvd version includes parts of the 2 movies, edited in back and forth passages and is way smaller.

The editing is quite good and i can understand that for commercial purposes why it was done.. but i strongly advise people who loved the small version to watch the extended one.

The childhood part is practically gone & Arn's training & relationship is perhaps too small in the edited version... but this is a fine example of how to edit a movie without loosing the overall concept.

A great movie that i recommend for lovers of "Kingdom of Heaven" or general epic movies.

A proof that scandinavian movies are way ahead of many european movie productions, both in terms of production values/direction & acting. Excellent actors in Arn.

thx for spoilers

My husband and I are watching the whole series on Netflix and staying up late into the morning to see it. The so-called spoilers in this thread are not that much. There is plenty of story development to sustain a desire to see the entire series or 2 whole movies. I'd like to see both movies now, so we can see extended scenes.

reply

I just watched the 133 minute version as it is available for streaming on Netflix. Does the mini-series show any interaction between Arn and Magnus at all?

reply

So which extended version would you recommend? The miniseries or the 2 films?

The film I saw I think is the 2009 edited theatrical intentional release but it's labeled as the 1997 film so wondering why people got angry that the OP spoiled the second film which is the second half of the first film.

reply

Were you aware that this was also a T.V. mini series? There is a very long version on film and the tv show. I believe it use to be on "Netflix"? I saw the series, it explains everything from birth to his death.

reply

I just watched the 2 hour and 13 minutes as well and confused about the different versions.
