Peter Kirk trapped at light speed

One thing has been bugging me about Commander Peter Kirk, James Kirk's nephew, who was commanding the 1701-M. Well, Charlie is about 3 years older than Peter, and Charlie was in his late 50's, so logically, wouldn't Peter be in his mid 50's instead of his mid 30's?

Why I thought it was possible that Peter Kirk was trapped at light speed, time dilation. Time slows down as you approach the speed of light.

Or some other temporal phenomenon, or even cyro-stasis.

reply

Or, a future Charlie could have gone through the guardian of forever, and landed at the wrong point.

It is never stated that it is Peter Kirk commanding the Enterprise-M. In the script, he is known as Commander Kirk. And Kirk's brother George had 3 sons. This could be one of the other two.

We have requested the name Peter Kirk to be changed to Commander Kirk in the imdb credits, but someone (not mentioning names) keeps requesting to change it back.

But, the intention of the writers and producers was not to name this Kirk nephew...

I'm afraid that wouldn't help much. Any living nephew of Kirk's in this time line would have to be Peter. Kirk had one brother who had three sons, but as Peter was the only surviving member of (George) Sam Kirk's family at the time Sam and his wife were killed, the other two must have died previously.

reply

I don't think that episode ever said he was the only surviving member - he was the only one of the family who survived the attack, but the other two could have been elsewhere...

reply

McCoy says it.

From the transcript:

"Captain, I understand your concern. Your affection for Spock, the fact that your nephew is the last survivor of your brother's family."

Of course, it is the 23rd century. Perhaps Aurelan and Sam left behind some frozen embryos....

They never once say its Peter Kirk, in the film. I have a official DVD of Star Trek:oGaM and have watched it multiple times, it simply says that Captain James T. Kirk was his Uncle. Quite possibly it could have been his Great Uncle, I refer to my Great Uncle simply as Uncle.

It would be quite sad, if I was the first person to think of this. Maybe, Commander Kirk in the film is Peter Kirks son, it would be logical based on the age of Charlie Evans being 57 years old and the new Captain Kirk only being around 35.

Peter Kirk was 14 years old and Charlie Evans was 17, 40 years prior.
That would make Peter Kirk 54.

Problem is, I don't think the writers thought of it that way.

I have seen "Star Trek: Of Gods and Men" about a dozen times now. I have always assumed that the character in command of that ship was "Peter Kirk", so this is strange news to me. Having watched the original 60s episode recently, it seemed clear to me that Peter's brothers were dead. Personally, I think the movie has more emotional impact if it's Peter Kirk, as the fans know that character from the original series, and OGAM was created to celebrate Trek's 40th anniversary. Having it be just some random family member that we never met before takes away the edge that Peter Kirk brings to the story.
