REMAKE coming up!!!

After the great success of The Departed (still can't believe it won the Best Motion Pictuer Oscar! How pathetic!), Seung Sing / Confession of Pain is going to be remade, too!!!
It's basically going to be the same people who already remade Infernal Affairs. Leonardo DiCaprio is confirmed to play a leading role, he's also producing the piece together with Roy "godfather-of-american-remakes-of-asian-films" Lee and Wiliam Monaghan who will also write the script (just won the Oscar for The Departed screenplay).

reply

I love the writer and the star but come on, even if this wasn't made by THE SAME PEOPLE that made Infernal Affairs, its just a bit too similar to make this soon I'd say.

reply

wow too obvious that ALan Mak and Felix CHong want a piece of the $$$$.

reply

is there anything they WONT remake? seriously.

reply

DOn't you mean the (Godfather of turning great masterpieces into MAster pieces of SHI*?

reply

Guess you could say that. Although I only know of one true 10/10 masterpiece that's been remade, which is Infernal Affairs...
Some films I dont even get why they're remade. Like The Grudge, The Ring, The Eye. I mean, they're not neccessarily bad movies but still, not sooo good you'd have to remake them... Anyway. *beep* Hollywood.

reply

Think this is a bit too soon and kinda a slap in the face to the original. DOn't even give it a chance and already a remake? Why is that even necessary? Seems like the whole industry is just run by $$$$ and not common sense.

reply

Wow, I just saw this; its not nearly as good as IA. I like the atmosphere, dialog and cinematography. But as a whole its good but no AI. I guess it leaves room for improvement.

Its weird when I was watching it I say the remake all over it. I wonder who will direct it.

Isn’t it funny how the writer of ‘The Departed’ has an Oscar because he saw Infernal Affairs?

reply

well not only is it lame that the new trend is probably gonna be remakes of hong kong cop movies, but the fact that seung sing was made LAST YEAR. they didnt even try to distribute it here. its not like the ring which was 5 years old when they made it or the grudge was 5 years old. its barely been out a year. its sad that they are that berfet of ideas.

He (Monahan) never watched the movie. He wrote it completely on his taking very little bit that he could from the script of the original and give its own identity from his own point of view. Yes it is a remake but theres little things in the movie thats different from the original to look out for to better understand that its not entirely a remake.

reply

i have to admit that i was never a fan of asian, particularly HK films, but IA was SO MUCH better than the Departed...i couldnt believe that departed actually won the Oscar...if only IA could be nominated fdjsafdal

I seem to like this film a little more than most posters. Seeing it in HK in January was kind of nice and recognising scenes from the movie during it and later was fun.

As for the remake, it's going to be a perfectly acceptable multiplex time-killer when you get down to it. The plot as such, being pretty much the same as a Colombo episode - in that you know who the killer is in the first 10 minutes and the rest of the time is spent finding clues and catching the killer. For my money, I don't see how they're going to translate what I liked about it. Atmosphere for one, setting, cinematography (sp.?, don't care).

Hmmm, actually Sofia Coppola would make a good stab at it for the emotional journey. Let's hope whoever does it refrains from possibly the cheezzzzzziest closing shot ever we had to endure in The Departed. It doesn't matter, we all know the remake will be bland bland bland and it won't stop me enjoying the original one.

reply

the departed owned IA because of scorsese.
so im going to say without scorsese this will fail

reply

think of it this way

alan mak and felix chong will use the money to make more and more films for us!

reply

the departed SUCKED.. i concur... best picture?? wth. the oscars suck.

When I watched Confessions, I knew it was prime for a Hollywood remake. It has all the ingredients for a Hollywood thriller, down to the denouenment in the end. I don't think it will be Oscar winning material. But if Leonardo Di Caprio can top Tony Leung's superb acting in the movie, he will definitely win some awards.

As for DiCaprio, well he wasn't able to do it the first time was he?

I honestly dont believe it when Scorsese and Monahan say they 'never saw the original' naturally they would say such a thing to try and insulate themselves from supposedly ripping off IA...which I agree is a superior film to the departed...

I really enjoyed confession of pain - its great that its different from IA; why would the filmmakers try to re-created IA? It doesnt make sense...going into the film expecting IA is just silly

So, it seems hollywood has found their new instant-oscar-creator machine: Hong Kong crime flicks. Jhonny To's The Mission and Election are getting remakes too, someone give Hollywood a cookie for their brightness.

"I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder."

reply

HOW can they remake the mission / exiled / election / triad election ??? The original are water tight - to include a load of crap back story or god knows what would be stupid.

I like the idea of taking the 'idea' of the film and remaking it (miike takashi did that with 'agitator', 'deadly outlaw rekka' and 'the man in white') - after all the departed is probably the best asian movie remake so far...but shot for shot stuff is just stupid...it would be easier to just copy and paste jake glynenhaal and freddie prinze jr's face on top of tony leungs and takeshi kaneshiro...and with the SFX today you can bet your ass they could do it too!

reply

As for DiCaprio, well he wasn't able to do it the first time was he?

Hence why he said "if".

reply

Seems more like Leonardo DiCaprio is obsessed w/ Tony Leung j/k
In all seriousness, I think Leo did well in The Departed, & he would probably do well in this remake, but I can not imagine anyone being able to top Tony Leung's performance. His ability to convey the emotion & pain of the character in the film was frighteningly brilliant.
But what's new I suppose.

reply

I must say I disagree with you because Leo overacts like a hella too much

reply

WTF? Even this?

Confession of Pain wasn't THAT good but still, holy crap, just STOP

reply

no, i think after the success of the The Departed, hollywood is eying on Mak and Lau's work ( director and scriptwriter of Infernal Affairs)...sad. and if the remake got an oscar(especially another best picture title), then that will be very very sad. hollywood is going to be dead within years.

Beware of akagi_2 , he floods the board with trash!

reply

" hollywood is going to be dead within years"

sooo not the case

reply

i can appreciate how the love of scorsese in asia has now come full circle with scorsese's love of asian films and The Departed - his saying he never saw any of the infernal affairs films is utter rubbish, when they all came out on DVD years back he was already slated to direct the remake...anyways, it a shame scorsese won the oscar based on this remake when he has far superior films that were nominated and he lost out - but c'mon, ANOTHER remake, i liked confession of pain, it was quite different from the IA trilogy ... at least give the original a wide release!! I would love to know who is gonna direct the film ... oliver stone perhaps?!
