Naming the lycan species

Lycanthrope comes from the Greek word for "wolf" and "human". When a person is bit by a werewolf, they get lycanthropy, which turns them into a lycan. This is in fact, a real disease, but it's a mental illness, where the person inflicted with it believes that they turn into a wild beast (usually a wolf) at times and acts as such.

Ok, so now that we got technicalities out of the way, I'd like to examine the folklore of the use of the word "lycan" for this movie. The vampires keep referring to the pure-blooded werewolves as "the wolves" or "William's kind". It's only the ones that can become human again like Lucian that they refer to as lycans.

Now, remember when Lucian was still a boy and was showing what he was capable of while Viktor and Sonja watched? Viktor asks her if they should make more, and she asks "of him?", to which he replies "like him". The way he said this seemed to have heavy emphasis, almost like he was saying it as a pun. "Lycan" "Like him". I know it sounds corny, but it almost makes me think that, for this franchise, that's how lycans got their name. Any thoughts on this?
