London view

On a limited season in London's Southbank arts complex, I saw this because of the interest I have in photography, film and green issues.

I enjoyed it, and am seeing an exhibition of Burtynsky's images tomorrow. It's the case that he does not explicitly ram home an eco-message and wants to leave the viewer to make his own mind up, though arguably that's disengenuous as there's really only one conclusion.

I was especially interested in how Baichwal complemented his pictures rather than duplicated them; how, after all, do you make a moving film about still images? I think her approach - a combination of filming the filming and the places (in grainy 16mm, which brilliantly contrasts with his stunning large-format work) and treating his images as points of departure for zoom outs etc works well.

The other question is how either of them avoid the beauty of the images overtaking the horror of what they show. Did they succeed?
