How accurate is this sequence?

I understand Peter Jackson did alot of research into the original models and script etc. But just how accurate is this scene, how much was in the script and how much was just guess work?

We won't really know until (if) the scene is found.

There may have been a snake in the original (it can be seen behind the spider-crab in one of the surviving photos). Also, nobody's quite sure what the killer-tentacle-insect looked like. And the spider-crab was just that - a spider crab (there are photos of them on Google Pictures and Wikipedia). The ravine was originally just a pit (the version in King Kong surviving prints showing the sailors falling is the re-filmed version made when the spider pit scene was removed). There was also a giant spider which climbed up the vine (replaced by a two-legged lizard).
