Why caterpillars instead of aphids?

Calling it honeydew is about 3 letters off. It should be called honeypoo. The gargantuon caterpillars were a nice "cow" effect, but I've never heard of ants milking them for honeypoo. The often do it w/ aphids, & scale insects & (I believe)other species. But are caterpillars one of them?
