The diary?

Why does Emily give Will the diary to take to Summer Hartley instead of just mailing it to her herself?

Was Emily hoping that something would happen between Will and Summer to ease her guilt about sleeping with Will's roommate, or had she even slept with him at that point in the film?

reply

That's what I thought as well. It's pretty manipulative, no?

reply

If I am not mistaken, wasn't it briefly mentioned both women were lovers in college?

reply

Absolutely, it's very manipulative, if that's really the reason why she gave it to him. Kinda doesn't paint her in a very flattering light, lol.

And, yes, they were lovers. I just don't understand why Emily couldn't have just mailed the diary to Summer, instead of making Will give it to her. The fact that she asks Will to do it for her is what brings up the question of Emily's motive in the first place, and it makes her seem... sneaky, for a lack of a better word.

Maybe Emily was just too embarrassed to deal with the situation at all, and she couldn't handle even mailing it to her? I really don't know.

reply

Why would she want her ex-gf to have her diary in the first place? Or was it Summer's diary? I'm confused?

reply

It was Summer's. After going back and re-watching the bits of the film involving the diary, Emily does have Summer's address written on the paper wrapping around the book.

Now, this tells me that either she had planned on mailing it to Summer, and she decided to just give it to Will when she realized that he'd be in NY anyway, or she specifically waited and wrote Summer's address on the wrapping so that Will would know where Summer lived.. which brings Emily's motives in to question again.

Emily even tells Will, "Summer was on my exchange program at Cambridge, and all the guys wanted to sleep with her, and you probably will, too."

That bit of dialogue really pushes my suspicions about Emily over the edge...

well saying that everybody has wanted to sleep with this girl, and you are among them, might give the deed an apologetic light. as if to say "you have seen her, you must understand. right?..."

I wondered the same question, but the answer is not clear. If I had to guess I'd go lazy plotting it was just a device to bring 2 characters together.

I don't think she had slept with his roommate at that point but I do think she had second thoughts about the whole "plan" thing at that point and maybe tried to edge him to sleep around so she wouldn't have to be the "bad guy" in their relationship so to speak. My reason for thinking that is the fact that she really didn't want him to go and was scared of his plans and dreams. Guess her dream for them was to stay in Madison get married and live a more "normal" life.

I thought she wanted Ryan and summer to get together?

reply

Maybe to show him another "sexy" side of her? Maybe she knew he was going to read the diary?
