How early you guessed which girl he would end up?

I did it in the first 20 or 25 minutes

Why do all these people lie on here? No one knew who he was going to end up at the end. It wasn't obvious at all. I mean you could have "guessed" and had a 33% chance of getting it right, but would never have guessed how the ending was.

Agreed, it was pretty much left open for it to be anyone, Summer was ruled out when you found out she was pregnant unless that was Maya but that would of been an awful way to tell you kid they aren't yours. Even at the point of Emily/Sarah walking down the park I thought that it would be one of them moments where it first shows one character then you take a double look and it shows that its someone else, or Emily just walked passed lol

I hope it was going to be April but I like how it turned out seeing as Will was getting a divorce and he ended up being with April, the woman he loved :)

reply

I thought it was really, really obvious April was the girl. It was the way her scenes were played and written, but mostly it was her being the one to drop the title. From there on I was positive she was endgame, no doubt about it.

Not lying. I usually never guess where films are going because I never try to out-think the film-makers or get ahead of them. As long as it's at least semi-decent, I'm willing to go with it and look where I'm supposed to look. I don't consider it a major failing that it was obvious in this case. Rom-coms are always obvious.

I thought it would be April early on.. And im telling the truth! :)
Cause she was the only one who remained a friend troughout the movie. She had feelings for him when he didnt and vice versa.. Summer and Emily were both in a relationship with him.
So my conclusion was, since they both were unresolved with each other, April must be "the one"..
Quite easy when it comes to rom coms ;)

Just as the opening credits rolled and Isla Fisher's name came after that of Ryan Reynolds; always a strong indicator.

It was the "definately, maybe" moment yes, but at the time I did wonder whether the phrase would be repeated multiple times throughout the movie by different characters.

The real clincher was Jane Eyre. It was obvious that he would search for and find her the book and give it to her and that would perhaps make her the main character. For me that was a big clue.

I also figured out at this point that she would the girl after the divorce, not the girl he marries.

I have to admit that after seeing the trailer, I actually thought this movie was about a widower who explains to his daughter how he met her mother. And I thought the movie was some sort of "mystery" as Maya put it that the viewer was supposed to guess to the end.

While the movie does not have a very good poker face, I would say that after 20 minutes, if you asked most people how the movie would actually end, I'm thinking most people would not have gotten the details of the ending quite right.

After thinking about it, I have come to the conclusion that this movie wasn't really supposed to be like CSI where the viewer is supposed to piece together clues about who mom is. I think it's just a story about a confused guy who tried to live his life as best as he could and made some missteps along the way both professionally and personally. The mom mystery part is just a gimmick but is not meant to be main point.

That's the way I see it anyway.

reply

i thought it'd be "her" after the "Definitely... Maybe." part. But that wasn't really the point of the entire movie. The point was, who the mother was... and that was the mystery for the entire movie... and i knew that the "her" would not be the mother

For me April's "Definitely, maybe" response pretty much gave it away who he was going to end up with.

reply

Yeah "Defintely, Maybe" was a giveaway. But if you ignore that, for most of the movie (as early as their first scene with the banter) you can tell that the "true love" factor is between April and William. That means he would never divorce her because he's supposed to end up with her. Its pretty obvious that Summer wasn't Mommy material, so it was pretty obvious.

Peyton: If I came back for Lucas, why did you come back?
Brooke: Duh, for Lucas. Game on bitch!

I predicted "April" after her first appearance at the copy machine. She was the only one with an " I don't give a crap " attitude. I also predicted at that time that it would be April, but there would likely be a "twist" of some kind at the end. And there was, Emily turned out to be the Mother, but he still ended up with April.

" But that wasn't really the point of the entire movie. The point was, who the mother was... and that was the mystery for the entire movie."

That wasn't the point of the whole movie at all. The point was to tell his story about his past and his heart break and his success, the guessing of the mother was just a little game for the daughter

the truth is we can't all be stars, but I'll be god damned if I'll settle for bronze....

yeah i thought it was about a widower too, glad i was wrong. isla is so sexy

she loves her

Well she had more screentime than the others, their chemistry was obvious, she was the most simpathetic of the 'nominees', almost as if the audience was intentionally or not, led to root for her and care for her most. At least that's the impression i got.

reply

I don't think it mattered how early you guessed who he would end up with, afterall there are only three girls which means there is a one in three chance anyone watching would get it right. I think the magic of the movie is how they would end up together in the end.

I knew it was Emily after she showed up at Summer's party (I'm very slow at figuring out movie plots). However, I had a hunch from the beginning of the movie that April and Will would end up together, somehow.

I guessed that he would end up with April at the end because to me they seemed to have a lot more scenes together. And after he founf the book I knew for sure that would have to tie in with the ending

I picked it from the fact that Isla Fisher was billed higher than the other girls in the opening credits that she was the main love interest. Couldn't pick who was the mother though until much later in the film.

**SPOILERS**I guess I wasn't paying attention during opening credits. I wondered why the trailer had showed three women and yet I saw only the names Elizabeth Banks and Rachel Weist. What made me lean toward April as the one Will would end up with was the sexual tension and conflict; that's always a signal the two combatants are going to end up together.

I was less sure about which one would end up being Maya's mother. I leaned towards Emily because Maya almost immediately dismissed her with the line about the first never being the one and also because she was blond and blue eyed like Maya. But I had a moment of doubt when Summer told Will she was pregnant and the two were doing googly eyes at each other. I could see Will fathering Maya as his own and not being ready to tell her until that point.
