I'm both conservative and Republican. And I love this movie. And I'm a guy. Why does it always have to be political? I get that there was a political backdrop to this movie but it played fair. Both sides got a bit of a skewering. And that's kind of the way life is.
A wonderful point, tigertodd. If all you can get out of a movie like Definitely, Maybe is politics then maybe your politics are taking over your life.
And for the record, most Holywood movies skew to the left because most Hollywood people skew left. The left isn't "sucking Hollywood dry"-- the left is Hollywood. If that's a deal breaker for you then you may just have to stop watching mainstream movies altogether.

I always disliked his beliefs but later found that it was because he felt he didn't live up to what he should have been in this world and everyone else below him was to blame somehow. He had to pay taxes therefore he never became rich. Haha ok. If you are worried about paying taxes, you clearly aren't making enough. Also are you not driving on the roads taxes paid for? Did you go to public school etc? Taxes pay for many necessary things in society. They fail to see this. God forbid the CEO's payed their workers a little more rather than taking huge billion dollar bonuses yearly. What about when they took the taxpayers bailout claiming it was necessary so that people wouldn't lose their jobs and then they turn around and write huge bonus checks for themselves and STILL fire people? Conservatives just don't get it. Sorry we all don't want to bend over and take it up the ass by these callous sub humans. All they think of is money pure and simple. It is even funnier to see people online that bash the poor and say that paying taxes drains their money yet they claim to send their children to private school and take lavish vacations and have nice cars. Upon seeing Ryan Reynolds imitating Clinton in the mirror, I thought it was going to be Liberal Hollywood's nostalgic love letter to the Clinton era, but it really portrays politicians as craven power-grabbers who depend on the dedication of young, naive idealists to get them elected. For all their talk about truth and justice, those idealists who are not naive, like Kevin Kline, use politics to line their pockets and advance their careers (see both of Rachel Weisz' articles about the candidate).
By the end of the movie, Ryan Reynolds has left politics, completely let down by his hero Bill Clinton. Far from "feeling his pain," Clinton doesn't even give a second glance to the guy who worked night and day to get him elected, raising over $50,000 for him in one day! While the President can hardly be expected to remember staffers he never met, the scene underlines how ultimately impersonal even the so-called human/compassionate politicians are. At Ryan's birthday party, his old co-workers say they'd vote for Clinton again. This might implicitly invite the viewer to weigh his dishonesty about marital infidelity against more globally important Bush legacies of a war based on false intelligence and "enhanced interrogations" at secret prisons, but there's no direct shots at Republicans in the movie at all, aside from two staffers saying GWB should "stick to baseball." That's pretty charitable compared to all the time spent painting Clinton as a disappointment nearly on par with heartbreaking girlfriends and a lost best friend.

I agree with your post for the most part, and found it mostly well written; but the quote above is laughably absurd. I am old or middle aged, and I have plenty to think about. I also have a future, and hopes and plans for that future. MY life is in the future. I've never known anyone of any age, who has even the slightest amount of self-awareness, who feels otherwise. I don't possess any "strange conservative feelings", except maybe some disdain for self-important, self-righteous fools who think they have it all figured out, even though they have yet to experience any of it.
As for lifelong social and political bents, we almost all become somewhat less liberal as time passes. Partly it's because more conservative or less liberal politics (AKA economics) generally offers advantages as we age. Socially, most of us gradually wear down a bit, and familiarity and disillusionment take the place of some of the exuberance and idealism of youth. That does not mean we become conservative, or even complacent. It just means we may not be quite as highly charged as we once were. I expect it will happen to you as well, like it or not, believe it or not.
And I agree -- youthful conservatism is unnatural -- young people have absolutely nothing to gain from conservatism. The idea of it is almost paradoxical; and yet it's quite common. In my experience, it is borne of ignorance, of children mimicking their parents, and sometimes a case of the blind leading the blind.
And just for the record, to those who equate religious or moral values with political or or social conservatism: Open your eyes, for crying out loud. These things have nothing to do with each other.

Regarding aid for the poor: Christian groups have given great deals of aid worldwide, in Africa (especially Sudan) and for disaster relief, and they continue every day. Atheists often convieniently ignore the fact. When a poor family came into my community's church, our members gave them money, furniture and even jobs. I don't see any atheistic or agnostic groups stepping up to the plate in such a SIGNIFICANT fashion. The media will never report or bother to investigate to find that monotheists are carrying the load when it comes to aid to the poor. They're stuck on "God is Dead."
And the same people who attack the wealthy also disregard their charitable donations -- which by anyone's logic: Those with higher incomes are in a position to give significantly more, and many do just that.
Regarding socialism: European nations are now coming to the realization that it doesn't work. Something that the USSR found out the hard way. Johnson's Great Society turned into one of welfare fraud and people wearing furs and driving new Cadillacs while redeeming food stamps.
