Were they gods?

The fictional town/world goes into chaos when they're not together, but at the end they become one again (ying and yang) and are on the primordial beach creating a new world, earth? At the end, he says "This is Planet Earth, Agent White. Do you read me, over? Today I kept the peace on this planet." etc and I took that as a hint that they finally learned who they were and took their rightful place as creators.

Either way, a trip of a movie. I liked it.

what i got out of it on this i think 3rd viewing is that the "Minotaur" was offering Black some sort of transcendental deification, and he finally [***SPOILER ALERT***] choose his humanity instead for the sake of his relationship with White. While the beach at the end does seem to be some sort of heaven, i think it also implies that they get to just be kids from then on, but i guess that you could argue that the perfection of their love would have been in its own way transcendental and immortal.)

indeed.

seen "Mind Game"...?)

your theories definitely work and fit and make the story beautiful; for me, they were transcendental beings, symbolic beings, you could call them gods. but for me, there seemed to also be parallels between them and characters they interacted with, of specific ages - black's prime age was kimura, and his older age was suzuki, while white's prime age was that emotionless policeman who takes him into care, and his older age was the homeless guy. they were characters in their own right, but were also intrinsically linked to black and white, and representative of them at different stages. for me, anyway! i took this to be a film that welcomes multiple interpretations, hence my own, which is probably objectively incorrect and the film not made with that intended connection to be made; but it's what i got out of it.
