This movie doesn't deliver emotionally

I think the biggest problem with this movie is that nothing absolutely heart-wrenching happened. Compared to Mind Game, (I know, different director, but its my bases for movies of this type) which really delivered a hard message about life, love, and just making the best of things, "Tekkon" just doesn't deliver any theme outside of the regular.

Throughout the entire movie, I kept expecting something to happen where Black would sacrifice himself for White, or something along the lines that would nigh-bring me to tears. However, the only scene that got close was when White got stabbed, but we're quickly told in the very next scene that he's ok.

This movie failed (for me, obviously not for everyone) to evoke that strong emotional reaction that makes a good film. The reason I said it should be terribly sad is because that's all that this movie could really do. It needed one emotional that would really make me go "wow, this movie was worth it for that," (which in this case was the animation, but that's not what I'm talking about) but it just never happened.

I apologize if my thoughts seem disjoint, I'm not thinking very clearly right now :/

I know what you are getting at but i personnaly found it very sad and then very uplifting - in fact very emotional. Of course all people are different and have different view points. It reached me more so on an emotional level the second time i watched (once i got over the initial flashiness of the imagery). I thought that the breaking apart of Black and White was very upsetting.

I agree with the previous poster. This film, I thought, was very emotionally gripping--and satisfying. The animation and the AWESOME soundtrack (by plaid...truly great) only helped out the strong themes I think this movie touched on very well. The bonds of love, if you want to be generic, but more so about the duality of man--the yin and the yang (the black and the white) in all of us, and the demons in our conscience that must be dealt with. I think the themes in this film were very emotionally riveting, and portrayed quite well with the whole "Black and White" analogy, as well as with the constant yin-yang imagery.

The film was eye-candy, and ear-candy (even the English dub, I thought was surprisingly good in most cases), but alongside that, I felt that the plot--not even this so much--more like the ideas the plot focused upon, were very definite and true to humanity. Something to think about, certainly, but more importantly, something to feel and something psychologically true; the film was riveting for me in this regard. It was obviously not flawless, as it was a bit slow to take off, and certainly contained some peculiar moments and dialogue here and there (thus my 9/10 score), I still think it was one of the better anime films I've seen (better than Paprika, which, for some reason, it is often compared to, and I have not seen Mind Game).

I'm relatively new to anime, but I have to say, this was one of the best I've ever seen, visually and in terms of its plots and ideas (and soundtrack!).

I suppose it must be a taste thing because I'd say it's one my favorite films for it's emotional component. It doesn't hurt that I absolutely love the soundtrack.

I agree with the OP. This anime tries to be dramatic, but ends up being a melodrama.

This is the first movie that made me cry since I seen E.T. when I was 8. The scene where White rides the elephant brought a tear to my eye.

reply

I can't say it makes me cry, but I still thought this was a very satisfying movie - aesthetically, mentally, emotionally - all around.

The scene where Kimura murders Suzuki is a personal favorite of mine.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

reply

Yes! I absolutely agree with you. That part of the film was particularly heart-wrenching and powerful.

"The scene where Kimura murders Suzuki is a personal favorite of mine."

I agree on that one. To be honest, that was the only scene I found emotional, though... to me, the way they tried to mix the more serious and insane elements just didn't gel well, and that prevented me from connecting with most of it. Presentation was great, but despite a few good ideas, much the story seemed like a mess to me.

the movie really ingored the entire point of white. in the manga white and balck are inseperable in every sense they are almost the same person. who white is is innocence personified. he is the only one that is virtually unaffected by the darkness of treausure town, to him it is a magical place. and the movie it fels takes the minotaur too far from the managa twisting the minotaur into something else entirely. the manga never made the position of the minotaur that clear, with is the whole irony its called black and white but everything is very grey.

It delivers spiritually... It's beyond emotion.

thats funny you say that, I actually cried for a good portion of the film. maybe you weren't in the right mindset or perhaps you just weren't personally affiliated with the message of the film, but all in all, i really do feel that this is one of the most gut wrenching emotionally moving films i've seen in ages

agree with poster. This movie was melodramatic for me. And too convoluted too, it doesn't really have a smooth flow, I thought the beginning with the chase scene is great, but the rest of the movie fizzed out.

Derivative would be the word. Like there are lofty ideas, too abstract, and they are trickled down into characters. Too unrealistic and simplified to be emotionally engaging.

i found it very emotional.

of course this was helped by the fact that i have a 10yr old little brother and have also been a fan of plaid (who did the soundtrack) since i was a young child, back when they were called black dog.

able to relate to the movie + loved the soundtrack + loved the art direction = big emotion.

i cried.
