For those who don't understand the film

It's a story.
There's no underlying message that I can detect. No great big metaphors, unless you really want to pull something out of your butt.
It's a story of two young boys in a town of corruption. If I had to pick any theme, it's protecting the things you cherish.

I don't find it particularly "trippy" or plotless, it just doesn't spell everything out for you and shove it in your face. I personally admire films that don't treat their audiences like they're stupid or unable to interpret things on their own.

Yes, this wasn't some "artsy" animation, this was really just the most base exploration of the depth of a familial bond between two orphaned boys. It did have an aspect of trippiness stemming from Shiro's likely mental instability, but that was also a commentary on the innocence of a child's mind, especially surrounded by so much corruption, and reflective of how hard Kuro has worked to shield him from the evils that surround them. It's a very touching film, but definitely not parading around as a commentary on some other "Greater theme" like many other films are nowadays.

What do you mean no underlying message?? The entire movie tried to communicate a message. That's why the plot might not make sense to some. Because Tekkon is not about the plot, it's about the inner anger in everyone. Anxiety, anger, confusion and fear can make a blood thirsty minotaur out of all of us. WE are capable of becoming monsters and thread on the entire humanity just to prove the world is ours. In order to avoid going insane under emotional pressure, we need to balance it with love and happiness which Shiro stood for.
