It's been a while since you asked but I think it refers to a tradition in Ancient Greece. When somebody died the family would place coins on their eyes to allow them to pay Acheron. He was the ferryman that made dead peolpe cross the Styx (river that separated the Earth and the underworld where dead people would go).
