Holly Hunter looks like a corpse

I'm watching series 1 on DVD, never saw it on TV. Holly Hunter looks dead: pale, bony, and her face looks like a skull with skin stretched across it. What's happened to her? Is she 80?

reply

No, she is just a woman aging normally. Guess she hasn't opted for the fake, plastic fixes so many actresses use so they won't look older (or so they think). I wish everyone would just let everyone age without all the criticism. You do know it's going to happen to you too some day don't you?

reply

She's not aging normally. The skin on her face is stretched so tight, she looks like a cadaver. Look at her face in 2008.

She's so thin, that if she was a model, she'd be accused of being anorexic. Maybe she's just burned off every last bit of fat that there's nothing left but skin and bones.

That would explain it.

reply

Actually, she looks normal for a small framed woman who happens to work out a lot.... she's only around 5'2" and from what I have read she does a lot of pilates, which tones the body and attributes to a lean 'dancer' look... and I mean ballet, not a pole. LOL

reply

I think she's aging rather well.

I’m sure if I was paying attention I would be very insulted.

reply

She looks fine as wine. Always has been a sexy vixen.

reply

Her face looks a little rough compared to all the plastic you normally see on TV but considering she's mid 40s during the first season, she looks AMAZING! She's got the figure of a very athletic 20 year old. Really bad hair though, it's not flattering at all.

reply

Mid 40s? She was 48 or 49.

reply

Forgive me, three years changes EVERYTHING.

reply

considering her age, she looks fantastic. i too think that she is too mascular and her hair looks horrible, but it sits well with the charector. also. as some had said before me, thank god not all women give in to botox industry.

reply

I'd hit it

reply

She does look a bit undead may a vampire or zombie..
She is only 54 that is not normal aging, I'm glad I never watched this I don't wanna see any more of her!
Who casts these shows?

reply

She produces the series and like most actors probably worked out a bit more to get into the role hence the lean look.
I think she looks great for her age or even despite her age. I do feel sorry for those that expect middle aged women on screen to look like youngsters , they must get awfully disappointed in real life

reply

She's actually been very muscular and overly thin since before the series. Although she is not going the plastic surgery route, which I give her credit for, she still tries to look young by wearing a hair style way too young for her (her long straight, bleached blonde hair is how she has worn it for some time now, she just wore it messy and long for the show) and clothes that are way too young for her (not for the show, on the red carpet, tops/way-too-tight jeans, etc., snapped out in public...) She is way too thin. Her veins are visible on her arms and she looks harsh (again, all this pre-dates the show) and her face looks older and harsher than it should. As we age, our skin naturally loses skin thickness. As a result, as women age, they actually look a little better with some meat on their bones, especially their facial bones. A weight that was good for us @ 20 isn't necessarily good for us @ 50+. Thank goodness she hasn't gone the plastic surgery route, as her face has always had some unusual (but pretty and unique) characteristics, and plastic surger would just make those characteristics look really odd. She should exercise a little less intensely (lift slightly lower weights, maybe trim the intensity or frequency of her cardio, and eat a little more. If she added about 10 pounds overall, she would probably look wonderful -- still slim, but healthier and younger. Also, she needs a hairstyle that is a little more age appropriate. Even if she cut her hair to shoulder length and then died it back to her natural brunette, it would suit her small frame better, her hair would look healthier, and she would look less washed out. Again, I give her LOTS of credit for not going the plastic surgery route -- she just needs a little tweaking to be one of the best-looking 50+ actresses in Hollywood; in fact, she would be one of the best-looking actresses in the over-35 range. Demi Moore looked much better when she cut her hair to just below her shoulders -- it made her look younger, too, but then she grew it back to too long again.

reply

I think she looks beautiful...her face, hair, clothes, figure, everything.

reply

Holly Hunter was born in 1958. She is 54 and is beautiful. Yes, she is too thin but this might be natural for her. Her face is beautiful and does not look old. Her long hair suits her and is sexy.
The people who are saying she looks like a corpse or that she should get a haircut have been brainwashed by watching TV shows and movies that show women in their 50's who have had surgery and/or botox. Watch carefully and see how many of the actresses of Holly's age can move their foreheads. She is a natural woman, aging very beautifully.
Older women often look great with long messy hair! She is sexy and alive. Why does that threaten so many people?

reply

Ha! TOO right!! ;) I completely agree--well, other than for the fact that, if she's just naturally thin (as I assume), she's then not "too" thin...she's just the way she is. ^^

I watched about 20 minutes of the first episode and I did find her appearance off-putting. Not to mention they really overdid the damaged-drunken-aging-whore-tough-chick who is supposedly smarter than everybody act.

In the opening scene we are treated to 2 hideous people having sex in a dump. We learn the male is married and the ostensible protagonist female is a filthy slob who leaves a loaded gun on the floor. She then proceeds to consume liquor before heading off to work after exposing her naked body to her dirty old man of a neighbor.

And yet, based on her phone messages and the reactions of her co-workers everyone just loves this degenerate slut. I guess that means the viewer is supposed to to be charmed by her grittiness too. If I am disgusted by the main character then it takes me right out of the story.

The sad truth is the people I know who would engage in the behaviors this woman does are not smart or cool in any way. They are worthless to society in general and tend to be a burden to everyone around them. The show is based on a fantasy world that doesn't exist.

Damn, I miss this show.

And Tom Cruise is gay. Fact.

reply

Don't be simplistic. You know nothing about the human bodies, it's obvious. Girlfriend is *beep* built! She's got a very low percentage of body fat because of her daily physical routine. She is mostly skin, bones and muscles. She would never ever have the muscle she has on her if she had an eating disorder.

Funny how when Bruce Lee was so thin you could basically use him in med schools to identify every muscle in the human body, people just thought he was awesome but when it's a woman, suddenly it's an "eating disorder". Learn more and check your facts.

Don't be naive.

"I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative."

reply

They're not the dumbass that thinks she has an eating disorder.

reply

You need to brush up on basic grammar, and I don't mean "dumbass," dumbass.

"I think I'll have a large order of prognosis negative."

reply

Really? This is the internet, nobody gives a *beep* about grammar here, except for a dumbass who thinks Holly Hunter has an eating disorder. Go back to your cave troll.

@Ithilfaen, aren't they silly? Remember when LInda Hamilton, coming off her romantic lead in the TV show "Beauty and the Beast," trained to the max and became the Sarah Connor of Terminator 2: Judgement Day? People like these right here were screaming mad because she "ruined her body." Same thing went for Ally Sheedy (former Brat-Packer in the 1980s) when she played Lucy Berliner in High Art in the late 1990s. Fact is, these women trained hard and developed the bodies of serious athletes. And to all those claiming that women of a certain age naturally look better with a little weight on them - girlfriends, PLEASE! Don't use your age as an excuse to let a healthy body become a thing of the past.

@kroyall-676-393527 "This show is based on a fantasy world that doesn't exist." Er, that would be as opposed to all the "real-life" shows we are treated to daily? Frankly, I LIVE in the world that exists. Why in the world would I want to sit down and watch more of the same? This was a beautifully crafted story that sucked me in and didn't let me up for air until it was over. One of the best pieces of American television I've ever seen.

I take your point but I think shows that glamorize disgusting people are silly. I don't find it entertaining, it is more insulting than anything. We have enough scum out there already without promoting the notion it is cool to be a degenerate.

People like you tend not to quite understand the definition of glamorization, nor how to differentiate between what is glamorization and what is good old fashioned story telling. Having marathoned this series (it first aired when I was a teenager and not "allowed" to watch) recently I think I can safely state with a clear memory that at no point can I ever recall a single instance in which the vast majority of Grace's more egregious displays of immorality had A) a directly positive consequence or B) received praise, or went either 'unpunished' or unacknowledged.

Just because something is on television or in film does not mean it's being glamorized. If you had taken more than a passing look at this show you'd know that Grace's character was very flawed and far from glamorous and as the show went on both the cause and effects of her actions were fleshed out yet in no way put forth as an excuse for her further (what some would deem) bad behavior or exercises in poor judgement.

Also, with all the sex, violence and generally adult themes, this show was clearly not geared toward a younger crowd so I highly doubt it was an attempt to promote 'the notion it is cool to be a degenerate'. Most normal, sane adults aren't lead into degeneracy by what they see on television nor act in a certain way because they perceive it as "cool". For most people, the idea of wanting to be cool (especially by emulating what they see in the media) goes by the wayside a few years into adulthood.

You don't like the show? Fine, it's not to everyone's taste and for more reasons than that it upsets their delicate sensibilities, but take care not to jump the gun next time because at first sight you found the lead character not to be as morally upright as you yourself seem to be. Flawed, sometimes even dark characters are often the most compelling in my experience.
