Why did Grace go to Mexico?

I know she saw a scan-tag on some jewelry from the little girl's room but, why then go off to Mexico?

Was it to be near "her," retrace the little girl's steps???

Thanks.

reply

That's what I'm wondering about, too. When she put on that fancy dress, my husband and I joked that she was having her quinceanera--35 years later. And how did Neely get to Mexico?

Also, how did she walk to an ocean from a border town?

I love Jesus, but I drink a little.

Thank you, I'm wondering the same things!?? I don't even know why she went to Mexico, what was she doing there? A trip down Esperanza's memory lane??? Who was the man in the white suit, who was the girl celebrating her quinceanera and why was Grace there and why did she say she came a long way to give her Esperanza's bracelet??? Seriously I thought at this point Grace had just lost her mind. Nothing made any sense, especially finding Neeley in the alley in Mexico? How did N get there? And where did that ocean come from??? Was Earl whisking her all over the place at this point? Gee I wish the producer/writers hadn't been rushed to wrap this up. The last two episodes were so choppy and rushed.

Oh well, I'll keep checking back here to see if anyone can explain some of this!

Wherever you go, there you are.

If the producers werent under pressure to wrap it up they probably never would. Seemed like it took forever to develop the angel story line because it always seemed like they were going off on other story lines that didnt seem to go far. I understand it was part crime drama but they always advertised the angel aspect of the show but every episode had so little to do with Earl...Like it was a side story or a hook just to get people watching.
I found the ending to be dissapointing but at least we got one at all.

I'm guessing that Grace's guilt drove her to go to Mexico, to catch a glimpse of the life Esperanza might have had had she not been killed by Grace.

Dying so young, she never had a chance to wear a beautiful dress like the one Grace put on, never had a chance to have her quinceañera. The bracelet was most likely meant for Esperanza on her birthday as it is traditional for girls turning 15, when becoming young women, to wear a piece of jewelry other than earrings, typically a necklace or bracelet.

The wedding shop that's in the photo was yet another milestone that was denied to the little girl. She would never get married, have a family of her own -- thanks to Grace. She sat on the very bench that the little girl did when the photo was taken. Grace is putting herself in the girl's place, trying to make up for what she's done, but of course it's all in vain.

That guy in the white suit, I'd say he's most likely an uncle or close family friend to the girl celebrating her quinceañera. The other girl, probably her best friend. He could even be something important locally. He's only important in that when he asks Grace what her name is, she replies that it is Esperanza.

Those girls tried to cheer Grace up and invited her to the party. She gives the girl Esperanza's bracelet because that way it wouldn't have gone to waste. It was as if the little girl did finally get to have her quinceañera through this other girl. It was the most Grace could do for Esperanza.

When she says that she went all that way there to give it to her, she doesn't mean it literally although it does come off like that. She was trying to give Esperanza a chance at a life she felt she had stolen from her and finding this other girl, just brought it all full circle for her.

The odd thing is how it all begins when she heading to Mexico. Hitchhiking, sleeping with the driver and accepting payment for sex like a whore. This is how she views herself. She can't go much lower. And then she tries to exclude herself completely from the equation and just focuses on Esperanza and the life she might have had.

As for Neely, following the balloon led Grace to the alley where she found her dead. Do I really need to say that God sent the balloon so she could find her? How did Neely end up in Mexico? Maybe she went there to escape Grace/Earl/God. She wanted to die and would find a way eventually. She had given up. But Grace had also failed her. Tying her up, leaving her alone, taking her stash and getting high on it -- none of that was going to help Neely and it certainly did nothing to help Grace.

When Rhetta freed Neely, it was probably the worst thing she could have done but it all comes back to many of the stories that Earl told Grace, about how things have consequences that we can't always foresee. A woman goes out in the middle of the night to buy milk for her children and dies due to a slip on the ground and hitting her head. A million different things could have happened that prevented that accident, just as a million different things might have prevented Grace from killing Esperanza with her car. No one can see the path they are on, except for God, and it's completely out of our control.

That ocean? Well where Grace went was Nuevo Laredo, a border town near Texas and on the eastern shore near the Gulf of Mexico. Nuevo Laredo was where Esperanza's family was from, and it was on the sign of the Wedding Shop in that photo that Grace had of the girl.

Earl didn't take her there. She went on her own, hitching rides down to Mexico and turning tricks for cash. He looks on as she walks out into the water. Will she try to drown herself? Or swim back to shore?

Grace saw what looked to me like a bus ticket stub for a child's fare to Mexico. Grace took the photo of Esperanza which she assumed was taken when Esperanza went on the trip to Mexico.

No clue as to why the two women came over to her and did her hair and makeup. Weird! In the first two scenes with the man and women, I was thinking he was a pimp and they were his whores. He was also driving my most favorite car, a Lincoln with suicide doors.

I did find the dress just beautiful and immediately thought it was made for a qunicenera.

The thing about Neely was very confusing. Did Hut take her to Mexico on the offer of more drugs? Did Earl bring her to Mexico as she was going to die anyway and the death would help Grace?

reply

The only thing I could think of was that she wanted to 'become' her. Same dress, same place, then go to the party as if the little girl had lived that long. This episode was a little vague for me. Grace was suicidal, overcome with grief and guilt for killing the girl, maybe finding that photo gave her something to investigate, gave her some direction to go? I'm really guessing.

Mexico needed 50 year old hookers I guess.

The only thing that I can think of is that the writers put almost no thought into the ending, as if they threw up their hands because the show was ending and put their minds on their next jobs. The whole Mexico thing was ridiculous and had no meaning. It would have been better if the show had ended when she and Neely jumped off the roof. That at least had meaning to it.

Was that Neely in Mexico? The scene was so dark, I couldn't tell. I just guessed it must have been.

I didn't mind all the stuff that happened in Mexico. I figured the women and the man were more angels. God was working extra hard to get her on his side.

/Going back to watch the very last hour.

Yeah, that was Neely.

yes--that was her body in the alley--
apparently Earl wisked her down to Mexico for Grace to find her and realize that she had to do the final "right thing" for her by taking her body back to New Orleans to bury her with her folks...
of course this was accomplished by angel-magic since transporting a dead body across international border is usually frowned upon without all kinds of special paperwork--

Frankly I think Grace died in the ocean--based on what she told Earl when they were dining at sunset before she went off to kill herself in the warehouse at the end...
all that transpired in Mexico was just pretty crappy writers' mind-f---
of the audience...they had to extend the story line and that was a good a way as any to do it...since it played into the mystical aura of Grace's bonding with Earl and her task from God...
at least to them

I think the reason she went to Mexico was to honor Esperanza's(sp?) life and maybe relive it for her.... She found the bracelet and picture and went to the various places (dress shop, bench, etc) and then went to the quicnerea because it'd was something that Esperanza wouldnt have been able to ever do...

The Neely thing, I dont think was Earl behind her being in Mexico. Hut mentioned several times that it was easy to find Neely and mess her up with drugs, so I think he had a part in her being there.

As for the ending... it definitely was rushed. I mean one second we're watching Ham throwing the ring and yelling and then cut to Earl for a few seconds and that's it. I would have liked to have seen Ham given the chance to breakdown a bit more. It was definitely emotional but I wanted more!

I think Hut took Neely to Mexico to make certain that Grace knew what had happened to her and to make Grace feel that she'd failed Neely. I think that's what made Grace walk into the ocean to commit suicide, Neely was the last straw.

After hitting the girl I was convinced she lost her mind. Her break down made absolute sense but I think it went further then that. I wondered if some of these events in the episodes following the little girl's death were in Grace's head. She did have a mental break down. So the Mexico thing could have a lot to do with the absence mind thing. One good example I have is when she steps in the blood at the beheading in front of the bar. "Just because it was an accident doesn't make it okay." I'm seriously shocked she was allowed to go back to work so soon. I figured they would have forced her to not work. Oh now that I think of it another good example is the little girl coloring in her living room... yeah I'm convinced she lost it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one confused by this episode.

I'm probably wrong but I thought I saw a date on the photo... 1986? And why give the bracelet to a young woman that probably had no connection to Esperanza? Actually, why steal the bracelet in the first place? Seriously disrespectful of the dead girl's family.

Grace hooking and then robbing a guy in Mexico!?! She was never a particularly easy character for me to like anyway but that was really pushing it. And she was hard to look at in the fancy dress since she was dirty, disheveled and hung over (not to mention scary thin and muscular), I found it ridiculous that she'd be admired by the rich guy and taken to a party.

Weird.
