Was this generation really this hopeless?

I felt sorry for her. It was terrible what they did to her. I was aggravated with how mute all the others who knew about this were. But I still felt rather sorry for the boy David who seemed like the only one of the boys who cared for her. The biggest guilty culprit was definitely the aunt. I figure she just had them all terrified of her.
