Most pointless film ever?

I can seriously say I've never seen a film that I found this pointless. What was the purpose? It didn't have any technical or artistic merit, the acting was poor, non existent characters, just no...point to it.

Can't think of a single redeeming feature. Genuine 1/10.

Just interested in what other people could of possibly enjoyed about it?

AGREED.

reply

It actually happened, geniuses. It's based on an actual case.

Which case are you referring to?

reply

*Chokes on his onion soup* LOL!!!!! *gasps for air* As if the fact that it was based on true events had any bearing whatsoever on the overall quality of the film. Where do you get your criteria from? Could you please explain the reasoning behind your comment? Maybe I just misunderstood your intent (I hope so), because I simply don't see how the fact that the film was based on true events would add any more point/purpose to the film? Seriously. Was there any point or purpose to the real life Baniszewski case that might have gone over my head? Maybe you saw something meaningful in the torture of S. Likens, or some redeeming value out of this squalid case? Or maybe you just didn't think before posting and actually had the balls to call others "geniuses" without having yourself checked the validity of your argument (if we can even call it that).

reply

Don't be such an idiot.

It is incredibly loosely based on an actual event. 90% of what's shown in this movie (most of the sado-erotic moments) never happened in real life.

reply

You're right - in real life she had many cigarettes put out on her, not just one. She was raped multiple times, by multiple people, not just once. She was beaten many times, by many people, not just once. She was forced to insert bottles and other objects into herself but didn't in the film. She had many more letters branded into her in real life. She had no one acting to try to save her in real life. Basically, with the exception of the blowtorch scene, the movie was much less disturbing and showed far less than what actually happened in real life.

Overall the movie was VERY CLOSE to the actual events - not loose at all - but the violence was toned down from what happened in reality.

reply

Actually she wasent raped at all in real life. But obviosly any form of torture is way more aweful in real life then anything you can depict onscreen.

The girl next door is based on a book, based on a true story. So there is deffenetly parts here that are pure fiction. The movie "American Crime" is based on the actual transcripts of the trial and documents following the investigations. Its more true to the events if you care to see it from a more documentary point of view. I've seen both and still prefer girl next door. It grabbed me deeper then american crime. Tho both are hard to stomach after you read the true story. I usually read up on stuff after i see a movie based on real events. Only after will i grade it. I give this a strong 7 but warn thoes who are sensetiv towards violence.

Yeah I've seen them both thank you. Both very powerful and disturbing films. The whole thing is just so incredibly horrible. It's just so incomprehensible to me that people can do things like that to one another. Then to read that idiot above who was trying to make out like the real life events weren't that bad. Grrr...

We're from the planet Duplon. We are here to destroy you.

and how does that make this film less pointless?

This movie is not meant to be enjoyed, not all movies are. If you failed to see the point, then you, yourself are pointless, not to mention...worthless.

reply

What a completely inappropriate, childish, pretentious, douche-bag answer. All movies 'should be' meant to be enjoyed. If not for the story itself, then for the artistic value of it. This movie had not a single characteristic of either. I doubt there is any producer who is going to put up money for a movie that they don't expect people to like.
So please enlighten us oh superior one, what is the point of making a film that you don't wish your viewers to enjoy?

You're a childish and ignorant pseudo film-buff. I see your type all the time. Accuse others of 'not getting' a film, while offering zero of you superior knowledge of insight into the film.

Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

reply

Overkill responses. I think the objection is to the term "enjoy," which suggests every movie has to be a pleasurable experience to have any value. But some movies aim to be primarily disturbing, even brutal, and thus--if effective and well-done--could be considered worthwhile without necessarily being "enjoyable." But hey, don't let me get between you and calling people "childish," "douche-bag," "ignorant" etc. just because they have a different opinion.

reply

"All movies 'should be' meant to be enjoyed."

Bulls**t. Some shock, some sadden, but seriously... it's an artform. Who the hell are you to say what all movies SHOULD do? This movie is based on an ACTUAL CASE. Yes, this actually happened. So is art imitating life?

Get over yourself, you hypocrite. Nice Ad Hominem from you as well.

Seriously, Brittney? He's pointless becuase of an opinion? A bit rash. You must be easily ticked off in life.

reply

i bet you enjoyed it quite a lot.

It's pretty awful. If you want a better film adaptation of the horrible events watch "An American Crime". Streamable on Netflix.

reply

Especially since the writer of "An American Crime" actually used court documents/testimony to construct the narrative--and while "An American Crime" actually goes a little light on the facts, it does not invent completely untrue events. This movie is mostly a fabrication, something started with a kernel of an idea from the actual events and imagined more gruesomely than what actually happened.

Never settle with words what you can accomplish with a flamethrower.

reply

IDK, I can honestly say it disturbed me. More so knowing it was a true story. If I had to guess the purpose of the movie? My guess would be to show what really happened in that house based on the sisters (?) account.. Who knows? It probably falls under the true crime genre so anyone that's interested in true crime might "enjoy" this film... I for one won't be watching it again..

reply

I feel that you are looking at this film with the wrong perspective. Instead of watching and thinking, "How will this film entertain me?" try asking yourself what you can learn from the film. Unfortunately, there are countess stories of horrific child abuse such as was shown in this film, and atrocities like this still happen. This film does an excellent job of raising awareness and taking us away from our everyday lives to make us think about child abuse and, hopefully, drive us to act against it.

reply

Well, first I thought there were some very unrealistic events.
Why didn't the boy just tell his parents or the cop? Well, he tried to tell his mom, but she was asleep and he just gave up. But it shows us something that at least I for my part have somehow forgotten but proved true after i thought a bit about it. And thats the fact that children are so easy to manipulate by their parents, or generally by people they know pretty good.
When i think back a bit to my own childhood, i just can't believe what kind of weird stuff i believed. Or at least I was not sure if it's true or not. So be careful what you tell (your) children, and what other people are. They eventually may believe it.

Finally I think it was not pointless movie. But I did not enjoy it.

reply

Nope. Very good, frustrating movie and well done.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I'm with you. Nothing but pure rape-titillation exploitation. And I am a huge torture porn fan! But this? Yawn. Yeah, the abuse scenes were unsettling, but really, I think the scenes were just a vehicle for misogynists to whack off to saying, "take that, b*tch." I seriously believe that that was the intention here. To sit there and say it's teaching a lesson because it's loosely based on a true story is like saying we should learn a lesson about Eastern European hostels from the film Hostel.

The acting (with the exception of the creepy mother) was horrible. The direction was boring. Even the costuming and sets were poorly researched, for crying out loud. This was supposed to be set in the 50s or 60s and I saw countless examples of modern clothing. Stupid. "Why can't I *beep* her, mommy?" Please. Who wrote this sh*t?

If people want to see a more genuine treatment of the case, they should watch An American Crime. They really need to stop seeing this jack-flick as a documentary.

reply

I'm a torture-porn fan too and when I was reading your response I found myself agreeing entirely with EVERYTHING you just said. It was only loosely based on the true story (some parts were pure fiction), the acting was often so bad it caused me to cringe (with the exception of the character of Ruth like you said), the whole film was sloppily made and edited, and the idea of there being a lesson to be learned is idiotic.
And yeah, what was with the sh*tty dialogue and countless stupid lines?
Overall, this was a boring film and a poorly executed attempt of making money out of a saddening true story.
Well said!
