Loved the use of red...help understanding (spoilers)

I really liked the use of red in her "dream world". I don't usually like that kind of thing...but it was visually striking.

So, I may be dense...but, she killed her family because what she imagined inflicting on Maynard really happened to her (inflicted by members of her family)? Or did I totally misinterpret that? What did the klepto have to do with everything? Did he represent her brothers? Why was her mother killed in the most brutal way when (according to my understanding of things) her father/brothers were the ones sexually abusing her?

I heard lots of horrible things about this flick. I'm glad I didn't listen...I kinda liked it.

I saw it over the weekend and I liked it too. Very different and very stylized. From what I understood, the doctor's sexual fantasies with her boyfriend Maynard reflected what happened to her in real life before she killed her family and was institutionalized. Also, keep in mind that she attacks the orderly Maynard in the same way that she dominates her boyfriend in the fantasy world. I think it's supposed to show the parallels between the real world and her fantasy world. The klepto is there to help her and to warn her that sooner or later she needs to wake up from her fantasy world and deal with the real world. He is psychological metaphor for helping her deal with the reality, at least that's what I made out of it. I think the mother's death was especially violent because she didn't do anything about the abuse and it was her job to protect her young daughter. I also loved the use of the color red, and the clever way her fantasy world intertwines and parallels with her real world in the institution through all the characters and through the dialogue.
