The message at the begining is a very poor one

Being severely overweight is a legitimate health concern that for most limits the quality and quantity of their lives. It is no secret that overweight people are harassed and made fun of and treated as lesser beings and I do believe that is wrong and that is not okay - but I got the impression the women felt there was no need to change just because they were fat and I think that's a poor message. The girl who wanted to start an exercise program was criticized and I think wanting to make a weight change is a positive thing and it doesn't need to be about getting down to itty bitty thin either - even taking off 50 pounds could lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other problems.

I have never liked the idea that losing weight must mean you are trying to please a media standard - there are serious health conditions related to obesity that have nothing to do with the cosmetic viewpoint.

Exactly. And by putting Lydia in that position, the movie agrees with you. I think the militant people in Lydia's fat acceptance group have it ALL wrong and the movie is showing that. And they are such JERKS for treating Darcy that way. Seriously.
