Action scenes

So everyone complains about action in this film? But they liked the action In Moore or Connery films? The ones where they looked like they couldn't fight out of a wet paper bag awful punches and kicks hardly secret agents with training. Craig actually looks like he can fight

reply

Verily I say unto thee...there is no action in this excuse for a film as it is impossible to see because of the awful editing. As for Connery I think a single punch from him would knock Craig's head clean off.

reply

If you can't see it then you must be blind and hardly Connerys punches you could see a mile away it's embarassing how bad the fights used to be

reply

As a magazine writer who interviewed Mr. Craig shortly after Casino Royale was released said, "All of the other Bonds may have looked big and/or brawny, but Craig looks like he could really hurt you".

Besides, I thought the final fight between him and Greene was pretty damn good.

reply

Exactly I mean Greene wasnt exactly a martial arts expert but I read on the trivia that the guy who plays him said he made his style out of anger it was rage from Greene and bond who was more traditionally trained struggled at first with it (plus the axe lol)

Also I don't care who looks toughest but look at the fights craig is the only one whis stuff looks like it'd work nI real life, I mean look at casino royale he killed with a rear naked choke. In a bloody brutal fight which took it out of him if that was Connery or Moore they'd have stayed at the top of the stairs thrown one big punch guy would've tried to tackle him he'd have punched him again and he'd have gone flying over the banister.

reply

And let's not forget the way he kicked the asses of the four MI6 agents in the elevator WHILE he was in handcuffs!

reply

Yep another awesome one. I liked his fight with hinx in spectre but that went slightly back to the more traditional brawling than martial arts but it was still better than any other fight from those and I guess it makes sense as he's getting older so his reflexes and speed isn't as good as it was. But that was still a great brutal fight scene. The staircase fight is still my favourite of Craig's.

I really wish Craig's era had done goldeneye Imagine a final fight between his bond and another mi6 agent with similar training. I hope they do something like that in the next one if Craig comes back. Most of his fights have been fairly one sided and he's not been pushed that hard. Hinx was probably his toughest. Or maybe the guy in skyfall on the train because he didnt actually beat him in that fight it was fairly even until money penny shot him

reply

I'm glad that seems to like Quantum Of Solace as much as I do.

BTW, in Dr. No, Bob Simmons, who was Sean Connery's stunt double for the first few movies, can be clearly seen beating the bad guys up. For example, in the scene where Bond is beating up the chauffeur, you can tell that's it's not Connery. Simmons is wearing a hat for camouflage, but it doesn't help.

I am a Vulcan. We embrace technicalities.

reply

I honestly don't get the hate for it. It was the first bond I saw in the cinema and it's got great action a good story and good acting. Sure it's different from other bonds but that's why it's so good that's why I like Craig's era it's different from the whole lets save the world from a giant Russian missile.

As for dr no I couldn't say I haven't seen it in ages but I know craig does most of his own stuff he was actually on the train in skyfall

I think people are just stuck in the past and want everything to be like Rodger Moore that's why Timothy dalton was hated even though I think he was one of the best I'd say he was my third favourite may have been higher If he did more

reply

Dr. No WAS very good, after all, if it hadn't been, there wouldn't have been 23 more Bond movies, right?

And you're right about Roger Moore. So many people were so used to him that they couldn't see anyone else do playing Bond, even when it was getting too old to continue playing Bond.

I really liked Timothy Dalton. In fact, The Living Daylights is my third favorite movie on my top ten movie list.

Kara, we're inside a Russian Army base in the middle of Afghanistan.

reply

Verily I say unto thee..If you read the credits on the Moore films you will discover that his first name is spelled Roger, in fact I have never seen anyone spell such a simple name in such an idiotic way. No wonder that you think the absolutely awful QoS is a good movie as most people who understand how action movies should be made consider it so bad that all copies of it should be destroyed.

reply

Why don't you go do us all a favour and drink some bleach if you hate a film so much why do you spend so much time on the board bit sad isn't it

reply

Verily I say unto thee...nothing wrong with the fights in Connery's films at all and no you can't see a bloody thing in the so called fights in this QoS junk. When Bond supposedly knocks out some guys in an elevator the editing makes it look like they collapsed due to Bond's halitosis. Watch a similar scene in the 1990 TOTAL RECALL to see what such a scene looks like when done by a director and editors who know what they are doing.

reply

Agreed. Best example I'd say is Bruce Willis on Die Hard with a Vengeance 1995. Probably the best realistic and best edited Elevator fights IMO.

Also other notables
Merantau 2009 raised the bar for fights in elevators. Also New World 2013.

reply

Verily I say unto thee..nice to see some praise for the excellent MERANTAU, as for DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE I'll have to check it out again sometime as I haven't seen it for years.

reply

The best elevator fight in movie history is without a doubt the one in Captain America: The Winter Soldier where Cap takes on about ten SHIELD agents.

reply

Verily I say unto thee...there is action in this bilge? Who'da thunk it? Who'da seen it?

reply

Huge, I really like the way you start every post with "Verily".

I think the complaints lean toward the way the fight scenes are shot and edited. The filmmakers took cues from the Bourne Identity movies utilizing the "shaky-cam" approach coupled with intricate editing techniques for a more engaging feel.

Most people like to follow shots smoothly rather than work them with overdone thinking, and with action scenes like these it will be too much to enjoy. I don't have a problem with the fight scenes in this movie though but I think they nailed it best with Casino Royale.

This film holds a special place on my DVR. I have seen it several times, and enjoy it very much each time. (Especially Bond's style in this film.) The action scenes make sense, as long as you are patient. (That is not me speaking from having memorized the action sequences from multiple rewatches but just going into it trying to take it in for the first time)

My only nitpick with the action is the shot that Mitchell fires at M in the beginning that frees Mr. White and sets off the foot chase with Mitchell. I still can't understand if a shot was meant for M and ricochets off the IV pole or if it's just a bad edit? She looks like she's wounded\shot and then (literally) 2 frames later she runs away. It seems like just a crappy edit that they used, but it really messed with my head and to this day I don't understand that brief 3-second moment properly. lol
