The bible

What power would the bible have if you wrote the script in new series?

dumb and boring. the objects power have no direct relation to the objects actual function.

reply

How about no matter how many pages you rip out you never run out of pages. Bible pages make GREAT rolling papers! errr.....objects in the room are indestructible, would never fly with the imdb crowd.

reply

"Bible pages make GREAT rolling papers"

LOL!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

reply

I'd advice against it; the ink and the paper is probably as toxic as the writing :(

Time is the fire in which we burn.

reply

he's got a point, bible pages do make great rolling papers.

reply

Since all of the objects do completely random things... it would probably instantly turn butter into cheese or something to that effect.

Like the Convenant Of The Ark it will be the power of God manifest. In other words, the Revelation/Apocalypse becomes a tangible and real thing. Now, wouldn't that make for a great story!

reply

" .. Revelation/Apocalypse becomes a tangible and"

Jeeesus Karaist!!!! Can ya keep the quasi reli-BS from flying

Remember, you're unique. Just like everyone else.

reply

BS?! Eh dude, the Revelation/Apocalypse is a book in the bible. It's got some pretty amazing descriptions of events that if the bible_found_in_the_room was a powerful object, it could make these events become reality. IMO, that would make a great sub-plot for the SEQUEL OR SERIES. Sheesh, this thread was about what the bible_in_the_room could do if it was an object.

reply

The Bible is a book written thousands of years ago by primitive men. A book that advocates senseless murder, slavery and the oppression of women has no place in our society today. It is time for us to recognize this simple fact.

Remember, you're unique. Just like everyone else.

Amen.

Huh_oh_i_c, relax man. This thread is just elaborating on the known fact that every motel has a bible in the drawer in the nightstand. He's not promoting Jesus or abortion or anything. Now I agree with your nice bible review there, but this is not the time or place to rant about your personal beliefs. It makes you look like some kind of religious fanatic. Exactly the kind of person you probably despise yourself.

reply

Since the powers are all mostly-random (perfect 3-minute egg anyone?), It would make as much sense to randomly choose one or more objects, and apply a previously decided ability to it.

reply

What the random?

reply

Just because this is all you see in the Bible does not mean that everyone must now instantly adhere to your belief and discard the Bible as a source of knowledge. The New Testament is largely about compassion and being kind to others regardless of what they have done. A message that runs quite contrary to your concept of the Bible only being about "senseless murder, slavery, and the oppression of woman".
"Recognizing" the Bible as a source only of pain or tyranny is far from a "simple fact". It is part of a debate that has been ongoing for thousands of years.
Though I have to admire the chutzpah necessary to act as though your minority opinion given on a message board should somehow be given some great amount of weight.
One final note: Read your history. The Bible was not written by "primitive men". It was, in fact, written by some of the more intelligent and highly-placed men and women of their time. Was Solomon a "primitive man"? He was a king, and widely considered one of the wisest men in history.
Try knowing what you're talking about before condemning a book seen as holy by a great many people.

And think about whether you would say the same about the many other holy texts you can find in the many religions of the world.

reply

Are you American? Why are so many Westerners, particularly Americans disrespectful of others personal beliefs? This is suppose to be a fun thread, don't force your opinions down other people's throat. People wonder why many are suspicious of aggressive extremists like you.

reply

Are you serious!? Some guy like ten posts earlier completely lambasts the Bible defacing it and therefore vilifying and disrespecting this persons beliefs, and for responding to that in at least a marginally respectful manner, you then get defensive with them and all Westerners/Americans! This is hypocrisy. This is unreal. You should probably think about what you're saying before you say it. Just like an Easterner. [NOTE: I don't actually think that, I just want you to see how annoying that is.]

Weren't we talking about a fictional TV series?

Please, no proselytizing.
Please, no anti-religious rants.

And, most of all vicky_lc2001-1, from an American, please don't paint an entire hemisphere with your broad, broad brush...

You seem to have missed a point... The objects don't have special powers that relate to an object's physical purpose. Nail files don't relate to sleep, for instance, and combs don't relate to time. By your reasoning, the clock would stop time, and a wrench would rotate things... clearly not the idea in the series.

Another issue is that the bible's power has not been discovered in 40 years... it's power must be very subtle or overly specific. (like the watch boiling an egg, or the clock sublimating brass)

Another point you seem to miss is that introducing theology into the series would be an obvious violation of the enigma. The goal is to allow different groups to interpret the event in different ways, and providing nothing to support or reject any of the theories.

I would personally be elated to know that some objects have powers that are too difficult to discover.

That aside, I have to agree with "huh oh i c", that religious people always seem to throw out their one-dimensional interpretations. It truly reinforces the idea that religion exists primarily to provide easy answers to simple-minded people.

reply

All the objects are not 100% random. Look what the key does.
Would if you held the bible and it allowed you to understand any language.

reply

Well, you're right. The key's function relates to its special power. I would consider that to be an exception to the general theme (or lack thereof) between objects and their powers. I'm a bit iffy about the bus ticket, too.

The bible's ability to translate language would make it pretty subtle in an environment where everyone speaks English. However, if the bible slowed the vibration of Cesium 133 atoms to 8 billion cycles per second, that would be pretty subtle, too... But this thread has a lot more of the "special insight" guesses than "altered reality" guesses, which imo speaks poorly of the people speculating.

reply

Please no bashing of religious beliefs here please, highly disrespectful. It's also very arrogant to renegade more than 50% of the world's population as simple minded people, let alone all the people that have existed for thousands of years. Let me guess, you hold the contention that Western Civilization, particularly Western people are not as simple minded as the rest, hence highly intelligent? That's pretty one dimensional to me. Contrary to your beliefs, religious or spiritual ideologies can be highly complex, as do other ideologies and concepts. Don't arrogantly condemn that which you don't understand, do some creative and in depth research, enlighten yourself. Hate and ignorance is the prime source of all conflicts, one dimensional thinking is found not only within religious groups (it is found in many or all groups), many would say, it is adamantly invasive amongst Americans or some Westerners. Why don't you take the time to ponder on that?

reply

Are you serious!? "No bashing of religious beliefs." I can't help but laugh at you saying that. Read your own post from earlier. And get off your high horse about Americans supposedly hating everyone else. I would guess that most of the people on this page (and this thread specifically seeing as how SciFi isn't available as widespread as many shows or movies) are Westerners or Americans. Therefore, what was said would be MOSTLY applying to Americans as "simple-minded," but in reality would apply to just most of the people reading this page in general. You really have some sort of inferiority complex or something you need to work out. This is ridiculous. Please, think logically, and act fairly. Before you get on someone about religious bashing, think about your own hypocritical comments. Thank you.

reply

I tend to see any reference to 'God' in the series being deist, as Einstein referred to 'God' rolling dice.

God dying as the cause of the event is only one of the possible causes.
Neither the best or worst.

reply

your bible power is about as sensible as it can get apart from it NOT being random at all - a clock that converts metal to gas, a watch that boils eggs, a pen that fries flesh --- now that's random

reply

I think the bible would have the power of whoever wields it can manipulate anyone to do or say anything like personality power

reply

Very interesting personality alterations. Would if the bible could allow one to prophecy or measure someones moral compass?

reply

Wouldn't that be an obvious violation of the existing rule -- that nobody has ever observed a power exhibited by the bible. Seems like the power you described would not only be rather obvious to anyone in possession of the item, but that it would have certainly been abused by Kreutzfeld.

reply

True and good observation.

reply

I think it should be something utterly useless, like the watch.

...makes grass grow 5% quicker?

reply

A watch can hard boil an egg. Has nothing to do with 'time'. Why should a bible be any different? The glasses stop combustion. The bible could make every dog the holder passes feel the instant urge to drag its butt across the lawn.

Or produce an absolutely irresistable feremone! That could work... Yeah, I'd pay to see that!

reply

There is something the bible does and they do not know what. I hope they make another mini series. Even my 8 and 12 year old kids were saying after one episode finished, "another Poppy play another". After 4 straight it was 2am and I had to say no but whoops I hit play...lol. This show was very addicting.

I know this post is a bit old, but the above comment was just too much. I didnt understand half of it, but since when did evolution become "unplausable" (or maybe implausible would be a more real word)? I hope it is sarcasm, but there is a ton of evidence behind it.

That being said, I am not sure what the bible might do. I hope all the objects, mostly the ones with the seemingly worthless powers, would be revealed in the series how they might be useful or if they ever were to begin with.

reply

Perhaps the bible could give you a sense of megalomania. That may be why Karl felt just in risking the world to return his sons life. It would also explain his need to colect as many objects and artifacts as he could get his hands on. As well as his need for overall wealth.

reply

Some of these are pretty cool ideas. I'm particularly fond of the Apocalypse idea. That'd make for an interesting plot device. Or the language idea. But I feel like the Bible, since it is a pretty huge cultural icon, should have a more significant ability than that. OF course, the reason it doesn't have a power is because the writers didn't want to touch that one, fearing it would offend someone or alot of someones depending on the power it had. I think it would be pretty cool if by reading certain passages, certain things happened. Like if you read, "Water into wine," that would cause water to ferment, etc. But only certain ones. Maybe even where Jesus raises someone from the dead. That could provide alot of material for the writers to work with.
