I'm frightened. Oh so very frightened...

But why?
Juliet is such a cute lil' fillette!
I bet she could really sizzle in a bed, of rice, all slicked up in butter..MMMmmm!
I sure wouldn't mind setting MY hook in her!
I kinda wonder if she'd taste fishy though......

Yes, I forgot to take my meds today.

Hmm...Looks like we have yet another piece of doo-doo that will happily be forgotten within a couple of months. Just saw the trailer... pee-whew!

I'll just let animation expert Jerry Beck do the talking:

"WHAT THE HELL IS THIS??

Sheesh! Traditional 2-D animation has enough problems without theatrical releases like this! I support the efforts traditional animation artists (and in this case, the co-director of WE'RE BACK and FIEVEL GOES WEST) who choose to ignore current market trends and find funding for personal projects or commercial independent productions - but this clearly low-budget effort may set the cause back another five years. Don't believe me? Check the trailer.

This feature is being distributed by Indican Pictures, a small L.A. based outfit, and it may be fine kiddie fodder for home video - but theatrical audiences, even those who might attend Saturday matinees, have moved on from this sort of thing."

Truely the words of a wise man.

This movie is just...wrong. I mean, an animated Romeo and Juliet with SEALS? And they changed the end so that the little Romeo and Juliet seals end up together and live happily ever after. This movie has no business being called Romeo and Juliet. What a sad, sad day.

This movie was created in Flash (the program used to make Homestarrunner) by ONE PERSON (an ex-Disney animator) who animated for FIVE YEARS and did ALL the animation and background work HIMSELF.

I personally will see it if I get the chance. The animation looks simply amazing. Especially for Flash.

Don't judge a movie before you've seen it. You've gotta give this guy credit for getting HIS movie this far.

All this negativity from people who haven't seen the film. The achievement of making an animated feature single-handedly is beyond incredible, and getting an independant film into cinemas is a big achievement in itself.

Hats off to Phil Nibbelink.

It's very impressive that he made this almost single handedly but the movie still looks like it will be awful and the low quality of the animation is something people will notice.

reply

actually, if you had actually seen this movie you would know, its not the animation that is its failing suit. The fact is, Romeo and Juliet have been done to death.....and to make it a happy slappy kids movie complete with singalong songs is a bit much.

This was created by one man, and the animation is fantastic......for a studio. Not as well shaded as most, and not as much detail to special fx, but the animation is actually very very good.

The trailer for this movie however, is aweful!

I'm curious about the Flash part. I know it was all done by one animator, which is freakin' impressive. However, while the trailer was pretty terrible (though are you sure it has songs?), I think the worst part is that it appears they showed the end of the movie in the trailer, and even worse than that, I think they've changed the end of Romeo and Juliet. It's a kid's movie, yes, but can you really have them live??

reply

Hey, if _The Little Mermaid_ can have a happy ending, _Romeo & Juliet_ can, too.

I saw the movie tonight at the AMC 8 in Burbank. I liked it, and I plan to buy the DVD. A friend liked it, too. My husband didn't like or hate it, but he thought it was "way better" than _Rock & Rule_.

Yes, i assure you, it is a musical and the musical numbers are of the worst you have ever heard....that is one aspect of the movie that shows it was very very low budget and low crew.....the lyrics are ridiculous and the music is comprised of one horrible synthesized midi performance after another....one more reason that budget does play a factor in how a movie is made.

As far as the end....well to not include too much spoiler action....basically they turned Tibalt, Paris, and the Prince into one retarded character (and i mean that literally).....noone dies in the end, and they live happily ever after. Oh, and Mercutio is one of the worst characters in the movie spouting out one-liners the whole time based on the most well known (and only known to some) Shakespearean lines available...which is another very lame aspect to the film.

Again...the animation is GREAT...and the movie had a lot of potential had they had an actual creative team and not one man (kinda egotistical if you ask me to really think he could pull off the whole thing.) and next time.....LEAVE OUT THE MUSICAL NUMBERS!!! I thought that period in our lives was over when Disney even stopped using them!!

reply

Yes, and the lines were taken out of context. "Wherefore art thou, Romeo" doesn't mean "where are you, Romeo". Grr.

reply

well that is a misconception that anyone with a less than high school education makes.

Wherefore in Shakespeares time meant why....and was used to excess in a lot of his plays.

reply

It's definately not for hardcore Shakespeare fans, but it's an interesting little film if you forget the Shakespearean influences.
