I am far from being an accent expert and don't know what to think about Jolie's accent.
What did you think about it?

It seemed terrible to me... it also seemed to just drop off at some points.

Mrs. Pitt goes in and out of character in all her movie roles. She tried to do an accent in "Alexander" with disconcerting results as well. I am not impressed with her acting, but admit she has beautiful eyes and hair.
I don't think her megabucks salaries are deserved. JMHO.
Read "A Mighty Heart"...it's awesome, and truly profound. The movie is tedious.

But in the synopsis and stated in the movie: "Marianne Pearl is a Cuban American". She sounded nothing like any Cuban American, except one whose parents are Dutch & Afro-Chinese; raised in Paris. It was definitely distracting.
She said she's French and her mother is Cuban... how does that make her Cuban American?

It was very, very annoying. She didn't sound anything like Marianne. If it was supposed to be French, it was a very, very weak French accent.
shareBut it's not supposed to be a French accent, that's the difficult part. Have you head Marianne Pearl speaking English? Do yourself a favor and check out the Charlie Rose interview on Youtube... She sounds pretty close to what ended up in the movie and Jolie doesn't drop the accent at all. Considering the movie was shot in continuous shots for whole scenes at a time, that's pretty good.
Of course I know I'm not going to convince the Jolie haters out there but as a foreign English speaker who is bilingual and also has a diverse background, I find most people have been focussing on the accent with a misguided premise... she's not doing a French accent (as if there was only ONE French accent for French-born English speakers anyway)
It's only British people who are experts on English language accents because of our own diversity. Ignore Americans when they try to say anything on the subject because they often need subtitles on U.S. releases ! Subtitles of English !

I understood your first point, but I for one, and I'm guessing many other people too, did not need subtitles to watch Trainspotting, although there was one character who spoke real fast and pronounced things very differently than what I'm familiar with. English is English, but if you hear an accent you've never heard before, with different pronunciations of every word than you are used to, you will be a little confused, no? It's only natural. And you misspeak, as if you think you have all of the UK behind you. Not every British person feels the way you do. Some have lives.

The thing that made it annoying for me was that when she was angry and shouting her accent sounded more 'english', than otherwise, and normally when being angry you turn back to your 1st language, which in no way seems to be 'english' in the movie.
shareTo me, (my opinion only) she sounded like she was coming out with more of a RUSSIAN accent (I thought the same in alexander too). That was my first thought. She didn't sound like she had a french, dutch or cuban accent at all. It sounded more like a russian one to me.

Jolie's mother apparantly did not pass on the French genes.

Jolie definitely sounded dubbed over at the one full sentence actually spoken in French alotted the Marianne character ... i.e. w/ the reporter interviewing her after Daniel's beheading ....
Also, notice how when the French speaking brother appears, Marianne is silent in both scenes. Evidently, Jolie couldn't cut it . . .
Would have much preferred, either A - a different actress all together sans the fake hair and fake accent or B - Jolie with her own hair and own accent (a la sofia coppola method)

The should have cast someone French, or at least somebody who has lived in France and can speak French, so they know the accent.
Jolie was completely miscast, definitely wasn't right for the part.
