why was so much of the music and vocals pre-recorded?

I'm watching this DVD for the first time and I'm struck by how much of the vocals are lip synched (like all of Justin Hayward's part, from what I can tell). Lots of the music sounds like they just used the original recordings, though some of it sounds like it was played live. Have any of you read any stories about why so much of it was faked instead of all performed live?

reply

what reason would they have to re-record it? if I'd heard it with lots of weird new voices, i'd have been extremely disappointed, and have you heard live music? it's terrible, why would you prefer that?

"and have you heard live music? it's terrible"

what?! you're a mentalist.

have you ever been to a concert or something.
when music is played live, it has so much more meaning and power.

perhaps you're just talking about recordings of live performances which can sometimes be a bit low quality.

to the original poster;
are you sure there is lip syncing?
i've watched it a couple of times and i'm pretty sure all vocal performances except the big rubber head are done live.

No, I'm not sure there was lip syncing. That's why I asked. It just "felt" to me like some of the performances were too perfect sounding to be live.

it may have been pre-recorded for the dvd release. But I can asure you, they were not lip syncing during the live show. I attended last year when they had Jennifer Elison as Beth. Not going this year. They got Jason Donovon for Parson Nathaniel... Ewwww

It wasn't pre-recorded on the tour, I saw it first ime round and to be honest, I was expecting parts to be pre-recorded, but when I saw it, I was blown away. It was supposed to be a one off, short run tour, but has returned every year, Alexis James was fantastic as the Artilleryman, must have listened to it a lot as a kid because he took the nuances of Essex's voice and made a very good impression, oddly Watson was very good as the Parson too, I was expecting him to be a bit of a let down, but was very pleasantly surprised.

All I can assume is that Wayne did a little 'jiggery-pokery' when transferring it to disk as at no point were any of the parts I saw pre-recorded. I've got the DVD somewhere, I got it the Xmas it was released from my wonderful wife. I'll have to dig it out and see where you mean.
