Based on a classic sci-fi novel?? No. However, most of the Rice/Lloyd-Webber musicals of the late '70s - early 80's are along the same sort of vein. More 'rocky', Jesus Christ Superstar etc.
Waynes version is a glorious one off, although, if you can find it, he did do a musical version of Spartacus with Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones. Wasn't bad, but not a patch on WOTW.
