Votes - What is the motivation?

This is not a thread solely about this film, but looking at the user ratings for Me & You, Us, Forever is what inspired it.

I noticed that out of the 31 votes (at this time), four people awarded it a 10, two awarded it a 9, and a third gave it an 8. I find myself wondering if these people awarded it high scores despite its extremely glaring flaws only out of a desire to support its moralizing viewpoints.

Anyone ever found themselves doing this? I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just curious about the idea. What would a movie need to do for you to give it a rating higher than you, personally and without outside suggestion, thought it deserved. (I once gave a film an extra point because I was impressed with it's accurate historical research.)

Man great thread. Well done.

It's a little like supporting a friend's band. Even if they suck, you love them because your friend is in it.

I think if a movie gets people having important conversations, I might be inclined to give it a better rating.
Michael Moore is a good example here. I don't love him, I like him, mostly, but I don't always agree with his methods or his delivery. However, I feel that objectively, his films get people having the right conversations and maybe taking ownership of some of the issues. So, I might urge people to see his films, but only with the caveat that they try to remain objective.

I hope people respond to your post, Cimmerian, it's a good question.

Peace.

Agreed, it would have done better when written for an equally sucky movie that has more viewers.

I don't think I've ever done what you described, but I think the other poster is right, the high ratings probably come from people that worked on the movie, or those close to them. It wouldn't take that many high ratings to boost the average for this one. Either way, it's not exactly the Christian thing to do, misleading other people into watching this obvious disaster of a movie, that I didn't watch myself, by the way.

I admit to giving low ratings for movies that I only watched half of though, simply because they were unwatchable.

I might be inclined to say it's reasonable to give a low rating to a movie so bad you couldn't sit through it.
