So if this movie was called............. ...

"I'm Through with Black Girls" it would be racist??? I almost guarantee it. I'm sick of white people being the butt of jokes and not being allowed to defend themselves. It's ridiculous. Black people think it's hilarious, but as soon as a white person makes a joke about a black person, then they are automatically racist. Why is there no White Entertainment Television, but BET is perfectly acceptable? Why is there a United Negro College Fund but nothing for white kids, otherwise it would be racist? I'm just sick of it. I'm not racist in the slightest bit. I don't see color when I'm talking to someone or around someone. But I do notice that it's always the "I'm black" scapegoat that is always thrown out anytime a black person feels they are wronged. It's ridiculous and very frustrating.

Actually, I had a chance to see the film yesterday, and despite the title, it is not a diatribe against white girls or even white people in general. It does have some fun with racial stereotypes, class differences, but its primary a romantic comedy. Its about a non-stereotypical late-20-something black guy that draws graphic novels, can't dance, and likes Star Wars, who initially blames his bad break-ups on race, but finds out that it was his own fears that got in the way all along.

Very funny, intelligent film. I don't normally write reviews, but I may do for this film simply because there is so few reviews of this wonderful film!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because whites miss the unrestrained authority, power and 'majesty' they had over Black Americans during slavery, and during the pre-Civil Rights era. Oh, do'nt get it twisted, whites still control everything, ie. white supremacy, but now, there is 'feedback' on their 'behavior', or rebuttal, or, at the very least, 'others' can laugh at them, and they cannot take it lol!

Honestly I'm kind of sick of explaining the difference between what you perceive to be reverse racism and reality... So think whatever you want, and continue to dwell under your rock.

reply

This ain't the place for this debate. It's tiring. Take some black studies courses or at least google, 'institutional racism in the United States'. That might help you understand the movie's title humor.

reply

Okay, big boy, let's go bottom to top about how dumb your argument is:

But I do notice that it's always the "I'm black" scapegoat that is always thrown out anytime a black person feels they are wronged.
Really? Because if you look at law, anytime someone tries to make an OBVIOUS point about the racial provocation of an issue, they're always accused of "throwing the race card". And I won't even touch the "I'm Jewish" or "I'm gay" card.

Why is there a United Negro College Fund but nothing for white kids, otherwise it would be racist?
Who ever told you NOT to have a United Caucasian College Fund. While I personally don't think anything special about the UNCF (especially when they continue to call themselves "negro"), the UNCF was originally formed, in 1944, it was to give Blacks a better chance in the then racially divided college institutions. And if you look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Negro_College_Fund) you'll see that most of the UNCF member institutions are all Black.

Why is there no White Entertainment Television, but BET is perfectly acceptable?
I personally can't watch that bullsh*t they pass off as Black Entertainment, in fact I personally prefer to refer to it as Black Exploitation. In the beginning, they had news and entertainment, and good comedy. Now it's just ass and ignorance, trashy television that also works to make us (Blacks) look bad. If you can have non-Whites own this "WET" and reinforce stereotypes, I'll be glad to see it launched.

Black people think it's hilarious, but as soon as a white person makes a joke about a black person, then they are automatically racist.
I personally don't see parody as racism. When I see a token Black guy, or thugs that are automatically portrayed as Black, I just see it as institutionalized entertainment. It's when the jokes attack at sensitive spots, that's when it becomes racism. When the mammies and baby's mommas come out, that's when the show's over.

So if this movie was called "I'm Through with Black Girls" it would be racist?
Really depends on the script. If it ventures into how we generalize stereotypes the was that this movie does, then no. If it jumps from baby momma to Black Panther to immigrant, then maybe.

But, despite my argument, no hard feelings.

WHY? HE'S NOT EUROPEAN, HE'S AMERICAN.

Hey j bayly! Boooo hoooo!

[i]Why is there no White Entertainment Television, but BET is perfectly acceptable?[i]

I'm so sick of this sniveling "argument" that someone white inevitably belches out. It's like one of you said it once and the others parrot it back mindlessly. First of all, there is White Entertainment Television. It's everything that isn't BET. Here's a few facts: not one new show coming on the air this fall stars a Black actress -- not one. How many black shows were on CBS, NBC, ABC or Fox this past year -- none, none, none and none. Imagine a year in which four of the five major networks had no White shows on them or imagine a year in which a new TV season started and none of the shows starred a White actress. Can't imagine it? Probably because it would NEVER happen. So to answer your question, the reason BET is acceptable is so that there is somewhere on the television where Black people can go to see material that acknowledges that we exist during those YEARS when WHITE networks choose to ignore us. BET exists for the same reason Black frats and Black awards shows exist, because for generations Blacks were excluded. If White people had the ounce of decency to include us from the start we wouldn't have needed (and still need apparently) these things. You don't hear black people complaining about CMT (country music television) being all white. So why are white people always whining about BET. Does it bother you that there is one channel somewhere out of the hundreds of cable channels that provides Black people with a creative outlet?

[i]I'm not racist in the slightest bit[i]

Liar. You're either too dumb to know it or too dishonest to admit it, but you are racist. You complain about what Black people have but don't even register how excluded Black people still are from the television programming you watch nightly. We are, at best, still tokens on most shows.

[i]I don't see color when I'm talking to someone or around someone.[i]

Liar.

[i]It's ridiculous and very frustrating.[i]

I'll tell you what's ridiculous and frustrating. Seeing dozens of White shows:

Brothers and sisters
Desperate Housewives
CSI
CSI Miami
CSi New York
How I Met your mother
Two and a half men
Law and Order
Law and Order SVU
Law and Order Criminal Intent
Lost
the new adventures of old christine
Navy NCIS
Without a Trace
Cold Case
The Sopranos
Rules of engagement
Ghost Whisperer
Medium
House
Bones
Smallville
Supernatural
The Office

(I could go one)

Frustration is seeing all of these White shows that focus on White people, many of which don't even have a token black character in the cast (there's your white entertainment television) and then coming on here and having to read some sniveling, whiny racist douchebag like you j bayley pissing and moaning about how tough white people have it when it comes to entertainment. Like I said: Boooooo hoooooo. Here's a little assignment, check the new fall season in TV guide or any entertainment magazine and count the number of shows starring white people compared to the number starring black people. And then complain. I dare you.

Wow you and spyke pretty much nailed him and the *sighs* ignoramuses like him that make those same weak arguments....funny thing is he got forgot to add in the black power fist and a few other things I've actually heard on top of B.E.T. and naacp, united Negro college fund and blah blah blah...it's so ridiculous and so old. I thought it was a pretty good. I'm confused as to how that guy pulled this lame rant just from the title.

What's more dangerous than sincere ignorance?

reply

Actually the deeper meaning in the film is about being through with the "idea" of what is "white" and what is "black". It's a really progressive film about people looking past exteriors and finding their interior matches. Check out the trailer at www.turnsoul.com.

reply

Let me say first off that I was a part of this film (though in small part: three songs on the soundtrack) but I was there to know why it was called "I'm Through With White Girls". The writer said it was named after a song, and the producer/lead wanted it to be called "The Inevitable Undoing of Jay Brooks". It ended up being called both.

Now, to destroy the rest of these tired retarded arguments:

I call this white "if" logic. "Oh yeah? Well, if blacks blah blah blah" as if it doesn't happen. The funniest name of a southpark character is "Token". This is not a one way street. There is nothing wrong with the title, you saw the word "white" and tripped without knowing hell nor high water about it.

"I'm sick of white people being the butt of all jokes and not being able to defend themselves".

This is hilarious for the simple reason that there are no black owners in mainstream media anymore. Any black person you name, I'll name you a white guy or european jewish guy who's their boss. You say BET, I say "Viacom"...

"Black People think it's hilarious"
Thank you for telling us what we think, we wouldn't know what to do without you...

"As soon as a white person makes a joke about a black person they are automatically called racist."
Then explain George Carlin, Bill Maher, Chris Voss, or essentially ANY modern white comedian going for the "edgy" tag...I love people's selective memories on this topic.

"Why is there no White entertainment TV?"
Same reason there isn't a Black student union at Black Colleges: IT'S REDUNDANT. Besides, BET is white owned by the same company that owns the MTV networks, Nickalodeon, CBS and VH1.

Why is there a UNCF but nothing for white kids?
-Tell ya what: let's switch. You whites give minorities the scholarship/old boy opportunities YOU'VE enjoyed unjustly for the past 200+ years in this nation, and we'll give you the UNCF and Affirmative Action. If you accept that trade, I want to play you in fantasy football for money...

"I'm not racist in the slightest bit"
-If you have to state that unprovoked, I'm forced to wonder who you're trying to convince; us or yourself...

"I don't see color"

OH SHUT THE **** UP WITH THAT! I don't care if you blind as a bat and deaf. If you are standing near me, you can tell I'm black even if you just SMELL me. Color is not something you get to choose not to see. What you CAN choose is how you react to it once it's apparent to you. Do you choose to act racist? Do you choose to prejudge a movie (prejudice) because a race is noted in a title in a non-offensive manner? Are you going to rattle off a bunch of tired refried dismantled white "if" arguments?

"I'm black" scapegoat everytime a black person feels they are wronged.

Gee, you think there might be a reason for that if the black person feels they've been wronged because of their race? Happens every now and again, ya know. Not often, you know...just...every day throughout antiquity and woven into the existence of this country. You know, stuff like that.

"It's ridiculous and very frustrating"

Tell ya what: how bout YOU and I SWITCH. I'll be the complaining 26 year old white guy, and you be the 31 year old black man born with a silver spoon in his mouth, tons of education and blatant wanton descrimination that basically says "your degrees and hard work mean nothing..."

I mean, with all this Affirmative Action and UNCF money they are handing out all willy nilly every five minutes to negroes all over america at the expense of all whites worldwide leading to desolation and white poverty, that sounds like a great trade, right?

I also have a bridge in brooklyn to sell ya...

Nope I'm still here. Just reading and digesting the things that were written in reply. Of course I'm wrong and have no idea what I'm talking about though, huh? I'm just some punk honkey who doesn't know what it's like for a black man in the real world. Please! If you spend your whole life thinking you're repressed then guess what, you allow yourself to be repressed! Then you feel the constant burden of having to bitch about it nonstop to get your point across that the world has wronged you. It's ridiculous. So should I bitch to my General Manager at work because I lost out on a promotion to a black man? Or maybe I can just shrug it off and chalk it up to affirmative action since that's a fair rule then, huh? Just get out of my face with this shi*t and get over feeling sorry for yourself. Call me whatever you want, but this "punk" makes a good point on the things I've said. You are too closed minded and wrapped up in your own little world of self pity to acknowledge that I did have valid points. Watch what happens when White Enterainment Television comes out, or the Caucasian College Fun is established, and see how the black community acts then. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will be inciting riots in the street the day that happens. It's so f-ing hipocritical that it's laughable. So go ahead, try and prove me wrong, and litter me with comments on how I'm a racist and the whole nine yards. I can take it. Confidence and work eithic is what gets you ahead in life, brother. Not skin color!! Oh and just for some further measure since you both know everything there is to know about me, I have a child with a black woman. So if you think you I'm discriminating my own child then you'd better check your damn self and watch your mouth because she's being raised in a house free of prejudice and racial garbage with the helping hand and support of her BLACK MOTHER!!! Don't even try to question that or comment about that, got it??

reply

Wow. It's amazing that you think Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are the kings of Black people and I'll tell you this no one gives a *beep* about White Entertainment Television coming out because, it's already on the air: CBS NBC ABC. Another thing for your ignorant ass White people can get scholarships from the United Negro College fund if they go to an historicaly black college, I can't get a scholarship from them because I go to a mostly white school. So I'll tell what will happen. No One Will Give a *beep* Besides YOU

reply

Odd. You didn't say you have a black wife, just a child by a black WOMAN. used to happen a lot during slavery...

But anyway, the NAACP already protested in 99 about the lack of blacks on television shows (essentially, every network besides the white-owned b.e.t.). You know what the networks did? Put a GAY person on every television show. Highly rated shows such as Girlfriends are getting cancelled, and the top rated comedy on the CW (The Game) almost didn't come back in the middle of a gripping storyline. Meanwhile, BET (Viacom owned) has no original scripted programing and it has provided no vehicle to promote new black viewing. So there goes your BET argument. There isn't even a "BET".

As for your boss screwing you over for a promotion, you sure it isn't because of your attitude? If it WAS because you were white and he was black, you'd have a case. Stop whining about it on the web and call a lawyer. (Good luck trying to prove de facto racism, tho. Welcome to the Black man's World).

As for Sharpton and Jesse, it's great to see white people whine and complain about these two. While y'all sleepin', Obama ran past everyone. You guys act like Jesse and Sharpton show up when there's nothing to complain about: Jena 6, nappy headed h*es, the shooting of a groom 50 times in new york, abner luima, amadou diallo...

It's not like they are protesting Wisteria Lane for not having any black people besides spooky ass alfrey woodard on Desparate Housewives, they are fighting for the recognition of national issues.

Now, I wonder if this guy has even SEEN the movie. It's a comedy that has little to nothing to do with race. It's about a guy who only sought out white women until he was thirty. None of the relationships worked, so he said to his boy "it must be the white women. That's the only common denominator" to which his boy said, "well, you. You ALSO are a common denominator."

Eventually, Jay finds out that his boy was absolutely right. As he sought out to find that stereotypical "black woman" in trendy upscale grown and sexy Los Angeles, he finds out that color does not define what he wants. His most recent ex brings that to light during the movie in a confrontational scene. The woman he picks also shows that by not being remotely like any black woman he imagined he'd find.

At the end of the day, Jay Brooks is undone, and he figures out that Love just IS.

*But I heard that all the black people in the movie got their roles due to affirmative action.*

EVERY television station (except BET) is already White Entertainment Television, and whites already have Caucasian College Fun. It's called white privilege.
