How Come?

I didn't see much promotion for this movie? It looks so good! Alot of the actors are notable. From what I seen, it was released in the US but didn't have much promotion and that makes no sense to me (of course, I live in the US).

I want to see this movie!

John Sayles is an independent film-maker whose films are not financed by the major studios. It's hard to market a film when you don't have the big pockets of a major studio behind you.

On the film's site http://honeydripper-movie.com/ they quote from a filmmaker's blog:

I read an interview with John Sayles the filmmaker. His film Honeydripper is out now, and he and his long time creative producer & partner Maggie Renzi are promoting it. Now I find Sayles to be an extraordinary filmmaker & writer, and I admire how he gets his films done. Honeydripper is his 16th film he’s done, and the Sayles doesn’t seem to be slowing down. In the article Sayles and Renzi discuss the difficulty of getting a film financed in today’s market. Both Honeydripper and Silver City were self-financed for a little over $5 million. I don’t know where you come from, but $5 million is a lot of cash, and yet it still isn’t enough. Factor in advertising & marketing expenses and your costs go up. Renzi mentions that it is easier for filmmakers now to finance their films in Europe then here in the United States, and Sayles may just do that in the future.

The film's web site notes that this film debuted at #3 in Spain, back in May. Too bad it couldn't get that kind of exposure here in the US.

In general, brainless popcorn movies will win out over thoughtful, educational movies in the promotion game almost every time.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

possible right wing conspiracy because of his last movie ? :)

i'm joking but it is a shame on the first night of release this movie grossed $250!!

his movies are thoughtful and deep and well executed but i imagine he and the actors in his movies don't do it for money but for the love of the art. like the trademark of mgm: ars gratia artis "art for arts sake"

his movies will be discovered or are known by those who care for art.

Because traditionally, it is extremely difficult to get financing for
films that deal mainly in Black characters and their storylines!

Although love for the blues genre crosses all color lines; you are NOT
going to find a willing gung-ho financier to greenlight a movie such as
this.

Look how long it took Taylor Hackford to get financing to make
a movie about music icon, Ray Charles; who pretty much represents an
important part of Americana! I think he said more than 10 years!!!!

I'm not surprised that Hollywood DID NOT produce this fine film;
but I am glad that John Sayles is an independent thinker, as well
as a passionate independent filmmaker!

I LOVE HIS WORK!!!

Well said Hillie, and nice avatar in your signature!

I agree, any movie that seems to show a history or anyone not Caucasian, seems to not make it to the big screen or big-budget treatment. We can see movies about babies and dogs talking, movies about unsavory behavior (like fart jokes, men in dresses, women topless), or movies were everyone kills or gets killed; but we don't want to see something historical and meaningful, especially about people of color. The history of black America is shunned or outright denied in schools, why do any different in theatres. I aplauded John Sayles for not following in the footsteps of his brethren. There needs to be more indendent minds like he.

hollywood makes movies for young teens...I enjoyed this film a lot but not a lot of young teens give a sheet about what happened in some backwater alabama juke joint in 1950........hollywood knows that and acts accordingly with movies based on comic books which goes right to the hearts and minds of their audiences...it has NOTHING to do with racism....if you didn't have your head up your own racist attitudes you would know that

reply

Asinyne are you a racist? I ask you this because you seem to have a problem with facts. The fact that Hollywood and the fat cats with the fat wallets are slow to finance movies starring a cast of mainly people of color is just that, a fact. It has always been that way and I must be honest here and say that a big reason why of course is money. People want to see blood and guts, comic book characters, naked bodies, and things being blown to bits. I understand that, but to call a person racist for stating facts is simply idiotic.

reply

I don't recall calling you anything

reply

You need to back the *beep* up....coming at me about my own racist attitudes!

No one, including your stupid, silly, (how well your name suits you) A$$, needs to
explain to me about the ridiculous, juvenile, crap that Hollywood churns
out on a consistent basis...JUST TO MAKE MONEY!

You might just be right when you stated that:

"Hollywood acts accordingly with movies based on comic books
which goes right to the hearts and minds of their audiences."

Empty minds......and unfeeling hearts!

What the *beep* does a stupid comic-book-theme-based movie have to do with
the human heart; and all the emotions it can contain anyway?

Oh, I can see where a lot of these juvenile movies appeal to young teens;
with all of the CGI, explosions, and super-fantasy, non-human subject matter.

But there are young people out there, astute and intelligent
enough, regardless of their color who appreciate movies such as,
"The Honeydripper," and other "people" stories that link us
all to humanity at large!

You need to pull that empty head of yours out of your arse, so that you can
breathe! Maybe the fresh air will help you think a lot more clearer!

RACISM IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN HOLLYWOOD!!!

You bring up a really good an accurate point.

Think about all of the trash that they put out there. All those craptastic kid movies and mindless big budget films that get trashed in the ratings and trashed by the viewers. (How many of those movies don't rate anywhere near as high by users as this one did.)

If that garbage can get financing and everyone knows it's crap, why can't the stuff like Honeydripper (and others like it) get financing and the advertising.

How many advertisements did you see for Beverly Hills Chihuahua last year?

Yeah...

reply

You all are missing an important point: audiences go to the cinema to see that kind of movies. Maybe they'll trash the film later, but they spend their money watching it. How many people paid to see Honeydripper? Films like Honeydripper have become the staff of which cult tv-movies are made of.
