Mobile phone in 1991

When Blake is going to see Sandra whilst his father was dying in 1991 he gets phone call on his mobile and it looks mighty small and slim for a model circa 1991. Did anyone else notice particular period inaccuracy? This one just made us a bit confused as to when things were happening.

Otherwise quite enjoyed the film, even if this seems a strange expression for it!

I agree it was very strange that a relatively modern looking mobile phone would be included.

I was there when this scene was shot, and the size of the mobile phone was discussed at some length.Colin reckoned it should have been about as big as a house-brick !!

reply

Yeah did anyone ever watched Saved By The Bell? It should have been the size of those they had!

Just watched this movie and i noticed it as well!

Was it not 1989? I heard Mayor Of Simpleton by XTC in the background and that was released that year.

Mobile phones were the size of bus shelters in 1989!

It was 1989 for time contraints and melding of events. Arthur Morrison actually died 15 December 1991.

In the Director's Commentary (region 2 DVD) Anand states he knew this was inaccurate but it worked for the scene, so they used it anyway.

Also, by 1989 Blake had 3 children though only 2 are portrayed in the movie.

Yep it should have been like a huge brick sized phone.

When I went to see 'Wall Street' in 1987, Michael Douglass has a cell phone in one shot, and when I saw it I thought, 'wow you can actually get a portable phone like that' (if you're super rich). If you see it now the phone is unbelievably big, like 4 bricks lol. And Douglass is holding it as if to say 'hey look at me and my cool phone'

I love that scene! I laugh at it for that reason too! My uncle used to have that cell phone back in the 80's.

I recently found my parents' first cell phone in their storage unit--it's about the size of a brick and very heavy compared to cells today. No wonder they rarely used it.

I worked on a video project in England in 1991 and my client in Chester had a cell phone that was the smallest I had ever seen up to that time. It was not brick sized but like a small to medium sized 2009 phone.

Another inaccuracy in my opinion: When Blake's dad is sending him off to college at the end (you know, the big scene) and he says "TTFN". Really? I don't think they said that in those days, or even in the 1989-1991 era if it was purely a flashback in Blake's mind.
